기록으로서의 예술작품을 어떻게 해석할 것인가 : 파노프스키가 말하는 작품의 '본질적 의미'에 대한 해설

Abstract

잘 알려져 있듯이, 파노프스키는 <도상해석학연구> 서문에서 예술작품이 담고 있는 자연적 의미와 규약적 의미, 그리고 본질적 의미를 구분하고, 세 번째 의미를 해명하는 것을 도상해석학의 고유한 과제로 설정한다. 본 논문의 목적은 도상해석학의 이론적 기초인 본질적 의미의 개념을 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 <시각예술의 의미> 서장에서 제시되는 예술작품의 정의와 구성요소, 그리고 이중적 기록의 개념을 분석한다. 이러한 작업을 통해 본 논문이 도달하는 결론은 다음과 같다: 파노프스키가 가정하는 본질적 의미란, 그가 인간 정신의 본질적 경향, 국가, 시대, 계급, 종교적 또는 철학적 신념의 기본 태도, 세계에 대한 근본적 태도 등으로 지칭하는, 작품 배후에서 작품 생산을 규정하는 일종의 역사적 세계관이라고 할 수 있다. 이 세계관은 창작자 개인의 예술적 능력을 통해 발현되고 발휘된다는 점에서 개인적이고 주관적인 것으로 보일 뿐, 사실상 개인의 의도나 관념을 넘어서 존재하는 초개인적이고 초주관적인 세계관이다. 작품 해석의 본령은, 작품의 형식이나 관념이 아니라 바로 작품 안에 응축된 이 세계관의 에너지, 곧 작품의 내용에 주목하여 작품을 세계관의 기록이자 징후로 이해하는 것이다.

As is well known, Erwin Panofsky, in the prologue of his Studies in Iconology, categorizes meaning in the visual arts into the natural, the conventional and the intrinsic types, and says that iconology is concerned with the interpretation of intrinsic meaning. This paper aims to clarify Panofskys notion of intrinsic meaning as the fundamental concept of his iconology, by inquiring into the definition and the elements of the work of arts, and especially into the twofold meaning of the notion of a document. The result of the inquiry is to be summed up as follows: Panofskys intrinsic meaning can be construed as a certain historical Weltanschauung, which underlies the process of producing a work of art and determines the production method. This Weltanschauung, which Panofsky designates as the general tendencies of the human mind or the basic attitude of a nation, a period, a class, a religious or philosophical persuasion, appears to be individual and subjective, in that it is realized by the artistic talent of individuals. In fact, however, it has rather a super‐individual character, since it cannot be reduced to the intentions and ideas of individual artists.
