Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the policy for the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language in Spain, a major policy task for the Spanish government. This study first reflects on the history of the policy making for Spanish education. The first phase focused on building a foundation for growth through the creation of the DELE in 1988 and the establishment of the Instituto Cervantes in 1991. The second phase focused on growing in earnest, with the introduction of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by the Council of Europe in 2001 and the publication of Curricular Plan of the Instituto Cervantes in 2006. There are six representative policies: (1) the organization of the DELE, (2) the provision of Spanish courses, (3) the provision of training courses for Spanish teachers, (4) the introduction of information and communication technology, (5) the support for research and publication of yearbooks, and (6) the provision of scholarships. Finally, this study also suggests implications for Korean language education.
