현대 일본화에 나타난 전통미의 재생과 동서의 융합: 마쓰이 후유코의 작업을 중심으로

Abstract

이 글에서는 보수적인 일본 화단에서 새로운 경향을 주도하고 있는 마쓰이 후유코의 작업을 통해 근대에만들어진개념인일본화가 현대에 어떻게 이어지고 있는지를 고찰했다. 마쓰이는 비단에 물기를 많이 머금어 엷게 채색하고 담묵의 선묘로 섬세하게 윤곽을 표현하는 고전적인 견본착색 기법을 부활시켰다. 이러한 기법은 자신의 테마인 고통, 광기, 트라우마와 같은 정념을 표현하는 데 효과적으로 사용될 수 있었다. 내용적인 측면에서는 유령과 시체가 부패해가는 모습을 담은 전통적인 유 령화와 구상도 등의 소재를 참조하면서도 그 속에 동시대적 양상이나 서양미술, 서양미학과 관련된 개념을 담아내어 현대적으로 번안하는 작업을 시도하고 있다. 서양화에 대응하는 개념으로서 메이지시기에 성립된 일본화는 서양미술과 절충하는 화혼양재의 방법론을 취했다. 마쓰이가 현재 평단의 광범위한 지지를 받고 있는 상황도 이러한 맥락에서 이해할 수 있다. 즉 마쓰이는 일본화의 기법적인 측면에 대한 천착과 더불어, 내용 면에서는 동시대의 상황이나 페미니즘을 비롯한 현대 사상, 서양현대미술의 작가와 작품의 사례까지 적극 수용하는 이른바 화재양혼(和材洋魂)의 전략으로 성공을 거두고 있다. 따라서 마쓰이 후유코는 이종혼교성과 인위성을 태생적으로 지닌 일본화라는 장르의 충실한 계승자로서 자리매김했으며 이는 또한 새로운 일본화를 창출해내기 위해 고투했던 근대기의 기억을 현재적 시점에서 향수하게끔 하는 역할과도 연결된다고 볼 수 있다.

This paper examines how Matsui Fuyuko adapted the traditional techniques of Nihonga, Japanese-style painting, in a contemporary realm of art. Since the term Nihonga was coined in the modern era, its art world is considered to be deeply rooted in a conservative way of thinking. It postulates a binary of the East and West that is unopposed, demanding Nihonga painters to implicitly perceive its inherent difference. However, Matsui nullifies such division, rather embracing the multifarious facets of the arts current development that has enabled artists to express their subject matters through methods of re-appropriation. In this respect, she successfully accomplishes her artistic objectives—to render human sufferings, madness, and traumas—by reintroducing and integrating both the technical and contextual elements of Nihonga on a picture plane in an unprecedented way. Taking into account her strategic approaches, she could be regarded as a critical inheritor of the genre, who asks provoking questions while succeeding the antecedents of Nihonga.
