Abstract
This paper examines the concept of Pyungchunha (平天下) in Dai Hak (大學, Great Learning) through Chu Hsis (朱熹, 1130-1200) annotations. With analysis of the annotations, this paper argues that Pyung is translated into do justice or bring fairness. Pyungchunha chapter of Dai Hak is rarely interpreted due to its textual inconsistency. Also, it is generally understood as the result of susin (修身, moral cultivation) so Pyungchunha is not given academic attention, Chu Hsi (朱熹, 1130-1200), the most influential Neo-Confucian scholar, insists that Dai Hak is a political text for all the members of community, not only for the ruling class, so self-cultivation is important to become good political members, However, although self-cultivation is the most important demand to keep the order of the world, it does not explain the mechanism and the operation of politics, In this article, I argue that Pyungchunha is not only the result of the self-cultivation, but the just foundation of political mechanism in the public sphere. To demonstrate this argument, I analyze this concept exclusively and interpret its subconcepts like Hyunlgu (絜矩), Ho-o (好惡), and the matter of taxation and revenue coherently. Through interpretation of these subconcepts, I demonstrate that Pyungchunha is not the state of peace of the entire world but the institutional foundation of governing.
