청자의도(H-intentions)의 개념화와 방향성 연구: 가족 담화를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 가족 담화에서 발생하는 고의적 불통(intentional miscommunications)의 본질을 균형적으로 이해하기 위해 언어 사용의 화용적 측면을 설명하는 주요 개념 중 하나인 재귀적 의도(Reflexive Intentions: R-intentions)의 한계점을 밝히고 이를 보완하기 위한 언어학적 시도로서 청자의도(Hearer Intentions: H-intentions) 개념을 제안하고 나아가 이것의 화용적 기능과 특징, 속성을 살펴보는 데 있다. 특히 청자의도의 개념화를 위해 상호작용에서 청자의도의 방향성에 초점을 맞추어 인식(perception), 이해(comprehension), 결정(decision)의 각 단계에서 청자의도의 역할을 탐구하고자 하며 이를 통해 가족 담화에서 청자가(가령, 배우자 또는 자녀) 고의적으로 발생시키는 불통의 언어 현상을 R-intentions과 H-intentions의 비교 분석을 통해 고찰한다. 행동을 구성하는 주요 요소 중 하나인 의도(intention)는 인간의 언어사용과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 인간의 언어행동은 의식적 산물의 결과이며 이는 인간의 내재적 요소들 간의 끊임없는 상호작용을 요구한다. 이 과정의 중심에는 의도가 존재한다. 이렇듯 의도는 언어행동을 포함한 인간의 모든 의식적 활동에 결정적 영향을 미치는 요인이라 할 수 있다. 의도는 의미, 화행, 공손, 무례와 관련된 언어사용의 화용적 측면을 살피는 일에도 자주 활용되는 개념이다. 기존 이론들은 언어적 맥락 수준에서 발화의미 혹은 화행현상 그리고 사회적 맥락 수준에서 언어사용과 밀접하게 관련된 언어의 화용적 기능을 다각도로 고찰하고 있다. 그러나 논의의 중심에는 대체로 화자가 존재한다. 화자는 상호작용에서 절대적 권력을 가진 주체로서 묘사되고 있는 반면 청자는 화자가 선택한 화행을 인식, 이해하고 이에 적합한 반응을 생산하는 피동적 객체 또는 수혜자로 그려지고 있다. 이러한 접근법은 언어분석에서 청자와 화자를 협조적 관계의 대상으로만 간주하고 나아가 인간이 참여하는 모든 대화를 소통을 위한 언어장치로만 여겨왔던 편향된 관점에서 비롯되었다고 할 수 있다.(한숭훈 2014; S-H Han 2014; Sifianou 2012). 특히 재귀적 의도, 즉 R-intentions은 Bach & Harnish (1979)의 용어를 수용한 것인데 이 개념은 Grice (1969)가 주장한 발화자(Utterer), 즉 화자의도가 갖는 속성을 구체화하여 발전시킨 것이다. Grice는 특정 발화가 갖는 의도된 의미의 효과를 화자의도와 이에 대한 청자의 인식을 통해 설명한다. 특정 발화가 의도된 의미로서의 지위를 갖기 위해서 청자는 특정 발화에 내포된 화자의도를 화자가 의도한 대로 인식하고 이를 토대로 적절한 반응을 만들어야 한다. 이렇듯 화자의도는 화자가 의도한 대로 청자에게 재귀(reflexive)되는 특성을 지닌 개념으로서 R-intentions은 화자지향적(speaker-oriented) 속성을 갖고 있으며 언어 사용에서 화자의 주체적 역할을 효율적으로 설명할 수 있는 개념이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 R-intentions을 특정 발화를 통해 화자가 의도한 대로 청자에게 재귀되는 속성을 지닌 화자의도와 동일한 개념으로 간주한다. 이에 대한 추가적인 논의는 2절과 4절을 통해 자세히 다루기로 한다. This study aims to propose hearer-intentions (henceforth, H-intentions) in order to understand why and how hearer commits intentional miscommunications in his family discourse. This concept is originated from reviewing Neo-Gricean studies that deal with meanings and illocutionary acts by focusing on linguistic intention based on speaker-oriented approach (e.g., Bach 1987; Bach & Harnish 1979; Grice, 1957; Strawson 1964). Since 1960s, Gricean pragmatics dealing with speech act (e.g., Austin 1962; Searle 1969, 1975) or politeness phenomena (e.g., Brown & Levinson 1987; Leech 1983) has just focused on the importance of speakers intentions (henceforth, R-intentions) in the process of explaining essential aspects of language usages including miscommunications. However, there are many linguistic examples that cannot be properly explained by R-intentions. Especially, in some conflictive or confrontational situations, hearer shows some specific tendencies of either not listening to or not responding to speakers utterance as well as either of producing more aggressive utterance or intending to damage speakers negative/positive face. These acts may be resultants from being absorbed in performing his verbal acts, I.e. utterance production and interpretation, which are composed of perception, comprehension, and decision. In such cases, the ultimate goal of both speaker and hearer may fulfill his egocentric purposes rather than interpersonal ones. Also, the matter of keeping or maintaining the other partys face-concerns is likely to be out of considerations to each agent. Unlike traditional linguistic approaches, a special attention is given to H-intentions which are expected to be closely involved in cognitive processes. This concept is expected to be a linguistic one for supporting hearers independent role that has been ignored.
