사회의 질, 경쟁, 그리고 행복

Abstract

눈부신 경제성장과 성공적인 민주화에도 불구하고 한국은 풍요의 역설과 민주화의 역설에 시달리고 있다. 고도성장을 이룬 동아시아 국가들에서 경제성장에도 불구하고 시민들의 행복감이 떨어지는 경향이 두드러진다. 그 이유를 이 연구에서는 물질재 공급 확대에 따른 한계효용은 점차 줄어든 반면 지위재를 둘러싼 경쟁이 치열해지는 데서 그 원인을 찾았다. 이러한 상황에서는 그 사회의 품격이라고 할 수 있는 사회의 질이 중요해진다. 실제 경험분석을 통해서도 국민의 행복감은 사회의 질, 특히 시민사회역량과 높은 상관관계를 가짐을 알 수 있다. 그리고 사회의 질을 통제하면 소득이 행복에 미치는 효과는 사라진다. 한국은 낮은 사회의 질 때문에 소극적인 위험 회피, 과도한 간판 경쟁, 그리고 승자 독식의 경향이 두드러진다. 따라서 행복 수준을 높이려면 사회의 질을 개선하는 것이 급선무인데, 그 핵심은 공정성과 투명성을 증진하는 데서 찾아진다.

Despite the remarkable economic growth and democratization, South Korea today is suffering from the paradox of affluence and democratization. Despite being among the East Asian countries that have experienced great economic progress, we are witnessing a sharp deficit in citizens life satisfaction. This research finds the main source of the problem in the reduction of marginal utility in increased material goods, while at the same time, competition for social status has intensified. Under these circumstances, Social quality, which represents the quality of the society, assumes paramount importance. Empirical analysis suggests that peoples happiness is highly correlated with and contingent upon the social quality, especially the competence of civil society. And if the social quality is limited, the effect of material wealth on happiness all but vanishes. Because of its low levels of social quality, Korean society is plagued with passive risk aversion, excessive material-based competition, and winner-takesall outcomes. Therefore, in order to increase happiness and satisfaction it is imperative to improve the social quality. The article comes to the conclusion that enhanced fairness and transparency is the key.
