Abstract

The current literature education at tertiary level in Korea is facing an unprecedented crisis. Above all, this crisis has resulted from the current tendency that the research outcome of the humanities is evaluated in terms of "social relevance" (Ger. gesellschaftliche Relevanz) in Korea. Hence, we observe that the practice-related matters of the Korean society tend to be coupled with literary studies (e.g. literature and environment or literature and women). In this regard, we need to critically scrutinize the current research tendency in Korea from the perspective of literary studies (Ger. Literatunvissenschaft). Being well aware of the current need to conduct this kind of critical studies, this research analyzes the practice-oriented research trend arising from the institutionalized literature education in Korea. The analytical tool for this study has a bearing on the social practical values that the German empirical literary studies (Ger. empirische Literatunvissenschaft) stand for. That is, this research investigates what kind of possibilities and dangers exist when the anti-hermeneutical mode of epistemology based on the "empirical literary studies" becomes the basis of "the social practice". At the same time it will be also revealed how some practice-related basic components of the empirical literary studies can be linked to the current situation of the Korean literature education at tertiary level.
