My paper examines the transformation of sociocultural order of modern China and the emergence of market power through the lens of models. Historically, China has employed various models as means of education and social control. In ancient China, Confucians widely adopted models of morality to have people emulate those models and develop a constant attitude toward the norms and values. My paper explores how models have transformed in different historical periods since the Yanan days. Confucian models were rejected in the Maoist era while newly introduced socialist models were honored. Model emulation campaigns, such as learning from Lei Feng and learning from Dazhai, were widely adopted by the state to produce socialist subjects who should live with such values as self-sacrifice and self-sufficient economy. In post-Mao China, however, old socialist models are marginalized and the state no longer plays a decisive role in the production of models. Today, an individual, a company, or a village becomes a model primarily because of its market success. Basketball player Yao Ming was conferred the national model worker title because of his market success. Anhuis Xiaogang village became a model by secretly rejecting the state policy and demonstrating its market success. Daqiuzhuangs case shows an extreme case of how a model that sprang from the market even rebelled against the state. Huaxi village also emerged as a model because of its enormous wealth which comes from its village enterprises. Today, it is the market rather than the state that produces dominant models. Based on my analysis of modern Chinese models, I argue that the market has already become a major power that produces the dominant sociocultural order in China today.
