Abstract
This study explores Korean students linguistic practices and diverse meanings of Konglish -a local variety of English in Korea- in a Korean international school. While the majority of the student population in the school is composed of Korean locals, English is the official language as the language of instruction. Under the class environment where English use is restrictively imposed, Konglish is a linguistic resource/speech style that Korean students can employ situationally and strategically to secure informal and furtively intimate social space of their own. In this context, I apply the ethnography of communication as a primary theoretical basis to disclose the meanings and values of Konglish in the school. This study first describes linguistic features of Konglish distinguished from the properties of standard varieties of English observed in actual speech scenes. Secondly, I analyze how students appreciate Konglish in their strategic practices by suggesting two primary functions; 1) the register of informality and intimacy, and 2) means and sources of speech play. Lastly, I examine the ambivalence in students language attitude about Konglish at the level of interactional practice and the level of discourse, as students indicate negative frames on Konglish under the hegemony of Standard English ideology.
