실용주의적 목적과 발전주의적 역사관의 만남: 미국 저널리즘사 연구의 최신 동향, 2005~2014

Abstract

이 글은 한국의 언론학계에 미국 저널리즘사 연구의 최신 동향을 소개하기 위해 2005년부터 2014년까지 미국에서 발간되는 언론사 전문 학술지 American Journalism과 Journalism History에 게재된 논문을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 미국저널리즘사 연구의 최신 동향은 언론과 민주주의의 관계와 언론의 자유를 강조하는 언론학 전통 속에서 발전주의적 역사관에 입각하여 모범적인 언론인에 대한 전기적 접근이 주를 이루고 있다는 특징을 발견할 수 있었다. 1960∼1970년대 사회사적 전환을 시도한 이래로 인종과 젠더 문제를 다룬 연구가 많이 늘어났으나 그 내용과 방법에 있어서 기존의 전통적인 저널리즘사 연구의 특성으로부터 크게 벗어나는 것은 아니었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 언론과 민주주의의 관계 및 언론의 자유에 대한 강조, 사회사적 전환 이후 인종과 젠더 등 정치·사회적 문제에 관한 관심 등은 저널리즘사 연구 풍토가 상대적으로 척박한 한국의 언론학계에 적지 않은 함의를 가진다고 평가할 수 있겠다. 특히, 저널리즘사 연구 성과와 저널리즘 교육 간의 연계가 오랜 전통으로 자리 잡고 있는 미국의 상황은 언론과 언론인에 대해 부정적인 인식이 커져가는 한국에서 언론인 교육 및 재교육에 시사하는 바가 크다고 하겠다.

This study analyzes articles published from 2005 to 2014 in the professional journalism history journals, American Journalism and Journalism History, in the United States to report the latest trends in the American journalism history research. As a result, it has been discovered that the latest trends in American journalism history consist mainly of biographical approaches to exemplary journalists based on the progressive view of history in the journalism tradition that emphasizes the relationship between journalism and democracy and freedom of the press. Since the 1960s and 1970s when the transition in social history was attempted, there have been many studies dealing with race and gender, but they do not deviate significantly from the existing characteristics of traditional journalism history research. Nevertheless, the emphasis on the relationship between journalism and democracy and freedom of the press, together with the interest in political and social issues such as race and gender since the transition of social history can be assessed as having much implications for the journalism and mass communication academia of Korea where the journalism history research is relatively poor. In particular, the situation in the US where a long tradition of the link between the journalism history research and journalism education exists will have greater implications on training and retraining of the journalists in Korea where a negative perception about the press and journalists has been growing.
