In Japan, Buddhism was spread widely before Confucianism. The imperial court adopted Buddhism and many emperors became Buddhist monks. The Tokugawa shogunate employed some Confucians. But it didnt mean that Confucianism was adopted as the main teaching of the state. The fact that Confucianism had not occupied the central position of t he nation is the distinctive feature of Japanese Confucianism, especially compared with China and Korea. Confucianism spread among the people as the personal moral teaching rather than national political thought in Edo period. Many Confucian texts were published not by the government but by the private book stores. Some of the Confucians ran their private schools in the early Edo period and the people who were interested in Confucianism could learn there. The various domain schools began to be established after the middle Edo period. The book collection of Kogido(古義堂), which was the private school established by Ito Jinsai(1627-1705), is still kept in the Tenri University library(天理大学図}書館). And the book collection of Keikokan(稽古館), which was the school of Hirosaki Domain(弘前藩), is also kept in the Toogijuku highschool library(東奥義塾高校図書館). These collections have academic valules to research how Confucian texts were spread in Japan.-
