이순신 장군은 고유명인가 기술구인가?

Abstract

본 논문은 스콧 쏨즈가 그의 책 <고정성을 넘어서 Beyond Rigidity> 에서 부분적으로 기술적인 이름(예를 들어, 정인교 교수, 이순신 장군, 경상북도 상주시, 이화여자대학교 등)이라고 부른 표현들이 어떤 근거에서 이름, 즉, 고유명으로 간주되어야 하는지에 대하여 탐구한다. 그 질문에 대한 스콧 쏨즈 자신의 답변은 다소 혼란스럽다. 하지만 본 논문에서 필자는 그가 가장 최근에 제시한 답변을 적절히 해석하면 그것이 고유명의 본성에 대한 중요한 통찰을 담고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있고, 나아가 그것을 쏨즈가 부분적으로 기술적인 이름이라고 부르는 표현들 이외에 우리가 이름으로 간주하는 다른 표현들로 자연스럽게 확장할 수 있다고 논변할 것이다. 필자는 이러한 논의가 고유명을 우리 언어의 다른 유의미한 언어적 표현들로부터 어떻게 구분할 수 있는지에 대한 흥미로운 관점을 제공해 줄 것이라 믿고 있다. This paper will examine Scott Soamess thesis advanced in his Beyond Rigidity, that what he calls partially descriptive names (e.g. Professor Kripke, Princeton University, Trenton, New Jersey) are names. His justification for this thesis appears to lack a high level of coherence we typically expect from his work. But I do believe that his latest justification for it, when properly interpreted and formulated, is revealing of a hitherto unnoticed character of names. What is more, Soamess thesis can be naturally extended to cover names that dont fall under the title of partially descriptive names, or so I will argue. This will shine new light on the difficult question of how to mark names off from other meaningful expressions in languages.
