This paper aims to analyze the image and function of the Blacks in Feliciano de Silvas Segunda Celestina. In the Western history, until the Late Middle Ages, the image of the Blacks was not so negative. However, with the beginning of the African slave trade from the mid-fifteenth century, the Blacks in the Spanish society were considered as an inferior race that lacked human dignity, and their skin color became the symbol of slavery. This social condition was soon connected with the intellectual and moral inferiority of the Blacks. In most of the literary works of this era, the Blacks were presented as a comic figures because of their physical and linguistic aspects. In the Segunda Celestina, Silva also describes the Blacks as inferior and comic character through their typical phonetic pronunciation and the parody of courtly love. To create a new comic character, Silva faithfully follows Donatus dramatic precept of Decorum. Portraying the Black characters in this light is a clear evidence that Silva, being a professional author, was well aware of the literary novelty of his time. Moreover, through the presentation of the Blacks, Silva contributes to the establishment of a new dramatic character that the Spanish comedy of the seventeenth century will develop in different ways.
