Abstract
Sport is a practice, which presents the life of a human being through physical activity. A sporting practice is a form of the human activity, including its own end as well as its tradition. The end of sport is its internal good that is the basis upon which sport stands. To illuminate the internal good to sport is to discover the end of sport, to understand the concept of sport and to retain the integrity of sport.
This work explored the internal good to sport through the object of excellence in sport, employing MacIntyres notion of a practice. Following Aristotles ethical point of view, the virtue theory of MacIntyre places a practice and its internal good as well as virtue in an important position. A practice as a coherent and complex form of socially established cooperative human activity involves its internal good. At the same time, the internal good presents the genuine meaning and end of the practice, both in this relationship suggest the reason for each being. In addition, a practice has the standards of excellence and its internal good presents the object of excellence. A human being may achieve the internal good to the practice on the way to reaching the standards of excellence.
Sport is a socially valued practice, which involves the coherent and complex form of skill limited within rules, and where an internal good to sport is achieved in process of reaching the standards of excellence. The excellence in sport signifies the physical excellence of a human being that meets the end of a sport. The physical excellence implies the excellence in physical ability, which is the ability for having good command of demanding skill. Such an ability explains the highly developed physical skill, achieved through training and learning. The highly developed physical skill is interpreted as physical prowess. That is, the excellence in sport is the excellence in physical prowess, and the internal good to sport is physical prowess. Sport as a practice pursues physical prowess for the sake of sport.
Based on the concept of a practice and the internal good to sport, sport is a practice that implies a form of socially established cooperative human activity, which involves the coherent and complex form of skill limited within rules, and where physical prowess is achieved through the human will and ability to reach the standards of excellence. At this point, physical prowess can be realized through a human body within the conditions of competition by one and the other, and of the rules institutionalized under the authority of an institution. The physical prowess may be achieved in a moral way when one possesses and exercises the virtue, which a sporing community aims for. Considering physical prowess as the normative criterion of a sporting practice, moreover, chess, baduk, cybersport, equestrian sport, and motorized sport may not be within the realm of sport while archery and shooting sport are sports.
A sporting practice is recognized as a socially valued human activity when it is not considered as the means of something else but as the end of itself, which is accomplished by achieving the internal good of physical prowess. Importantly, physical prowess takes precedence over others such as money and fame when dealing with sport as a practice. It is because physical prowess, simple but fundament, is the internal good to sport, which is the genuine end of sport. Therefore, a sporting community has to pay more attention to the internal good of physical prowess as the end of sport. A sporting practice will continue to exist when inculcating the value of its end in the members of the community. Furthermore, the possession and exercise of fair-play and sportspersonship is necessary to achieve physical prowess.
