Meaningful science learning could be accomplished when students participation in verbal interaction is high under collaborative learning environments, which was emphasized in social constructivism. In this study, heterogeneous and homogeneous small groups were constructed by students collectivism, which is a psychological property of cultural dimension. The instructional effects on their academic achievement, science learning motivation, and perceptions of science learning environment (Study Ⅰ) and their verbal interactions (Study Ⅱ) in science cooperative learning processes were investigated.
In Study Ⅰ, the effects of grouping by students' collectivism in cooperative learning strategy applied to middle school science classes on their academic achievement, science learning motivation, and perceptions of science learning environment were investigated. Students' perceptions of cooperative learning were also studied with survey and interview to investigate their thoughts about their goals, roles, and assessment, during science cooperative leaning. The students were assigned to the control, heterogeneous, and homogeneous groups, and were taught about three states of matter, motion of molecules and change of state and thermal energy for 12 class hours. The analyses of the results revealed that main effect (MS=54.39, F=3.85, p=.023) and interactive effect between the instruction and the level of collectivism (MS=48.80, F=3.46, p=.034) were found in the test scores of achievement. There were main effects in the test scores of confidence (MS=.66, F=3.41, p=.035), perceptions of science learning environment (MS=.85, F=4.08, p=.018), and rule clarity (MS=1.93, F=4.17, p=.017), and interactive effects between the instruction and the level of collectivism were not found. The achievement test scores of the students of low collectivism in the homogeneous group were significantly higher than those in the heterogeneous group (p<.01). In addition, the test scores of confidence in the treatment groups were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<.05). The test scores of perceptions of science learning environment and rule clarity in the homogeneous groups were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<.01). The students of high collectivism were concerned with cooperation, consideration, harmony, and unhurriedness, and those of low collectivism were concerned with competition, score, correctness, and a prompt action. There were differences in the perceptions of science cooperative learning in terms of students' collectivism. The results of Study Ⅰ implied that there might be differences between the students discourse patterns of heterogeneous and homogeneous groups by students collectivism.
In Study Ⅱ, we analyzed verbal interactions of 32 students in 7th graders science cooperative learning at the levels of turns, interaction units, and conflict behavior units, and compared their verbal interaction patterns between the heterogeneous and homogeneous groups by students collectivism. The relationships of verbal interactions with the achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were also investigated. The students verbal interactions within 8 treatment groups of Study Ⅰ during cooperative learning processes about pressure of gas, Boyles law, and Charless law, and heat of fusion for 4 class hours were video- and audio-taped, transcribed, and analyzed. In the analyses of turns, the distributions of the subcategories of the statements related to the task were found to be similar in both groups, and the frequency of explain was highest. The frequencies of interaction units were higher in the homogeneous groups (25.5) than the heterogeneous groups (14.4), and the frequency of symmetric interaction was highest. In the heterogeneous groups, the frequencies of turns and interaction units for the students of high collectivism (64.0, 10.0) were higher than those of low collectivism (41.1, 4.4). The frequencies of conflict behavior units were generally low, but the rates were similar in both groups. In the case of the homogeneous groups, especially, the frequencies of avoiding and competing for the students of low collectivism were high, and the frequency of cooperating for those of high collectivism was high. In addition, the qualitative differences between the two groups were found in the interaction units, and the qualitative differences between the students of high collectivism and low collectivism in the homogeneous groups were found in conflict behavior units. The achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were positively related with the sum of the frequencies of the statements related to the task.
In summary, the test scores of confidence were improved in science cooperative learning regardless of students' collectivism. In the heterogeneous groups by their collectivism, the test scores of science learning motivation for the students of low collectivism were low, their participation in verbal interaction between those of high collectivism and low collectivism was low, and the test scores of achievement of those of low collectivism were low. In the homogeneous groups by students' collectivism, on the other hand, the test scores of perceptions of science learning environment were high, and the frequencies of interaction units which were positively related with the achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were relatively high. Therefore, it is necessary to consider students collectivism when assigning them into small groups for the effective science cooperative learning. Educational implications are discussed.
