In an era of multiculturalism, there has been a demand for the design based on the uniqueness of culture, however, most of the cases were reckless borrowing of traditional culture elements and reproduction of unidentified design in Korea.

In order to overcome this situation, a deep understanding of tradition and ability to interpret culture are required. Hence, this researcher proposed a differentiated process and presented results through the symbolisation of aesthetic consciousness based on Korean traditional ideology.

This researcher has studied Taoism, Korea's distinct ideology, and found a linkage between Korean aesthetics and the aesthetic consciousness of taoism. From this linkage core values and the visual concept were derived.

The three core values of this study are Taoism as the source of Korean cultural identity, Korean aesthetics from the perspectives of Taoism and Graphical representations based on Rhythmic Vitality.

Visual concept is derived from the following 24 keywords
-
dc.description.abstractdynamic and vibrant, balance and harmony, naive and witty, rustic and whole, rising and lined, pure and calm, profound and weighty, generous and free, simple and restrained, round and supple, warm and natural, empty and colorless. Based on these keywords tone & manner were represented. This researcher could also develop the visual symbolisation of Rhythmic Vitality using these tone & manner.

This researcher has studied the relationship between Taoism and Rhythmic Vitality as well as the concept and expression of Rhythmic Vitality in the oriental painting. In the further study of visualisation, study project has reached to the comparison between western art and oriental art, trend of fusion, Korean lines and aesthetic consciousness of colours which focused on Korean white and traditional achromatic colours.

In addition, beauty of the margins, which can be found in Korean art, dance and music, and the concept of minimalism were actively reflected in the symbolisation of Rhythmic Vitality.

In conclusion, this researcher proceeded with the development of the cultural design contents of Korea based on the aesthetic consciousness of Taoism through the visual symbolisation of Rhythmic Vitality and completed the Primary Identifier, symbolising Rhythmic Vitality and representing Korean aesthetic consciousness of Taoism. Besides the Primary Identifier, basic design elements were developed such as logotypes, signatures, colour systems, typefaces, patterns and the fourth element. In particular, differentiated colour scheme and colour combination from the typical black and white or Koreas traditional five cardinal colours were proposed. Moreover, the fourth element, as the expanded concept of Rhythmic Vitality and the graphic devices which can show the margins and the contrast of Yin and Yang rather than typically repeated main images or distorted main graphics, was proposed. Finally, these contents were integrated into visual guidelines and graphic application examples were suggested in order to present new possibility and applicability of the study.

This study was focused on Korean aesthetic consciousness of Taoism as a theme which can reflect the cultural identity of Korea, while symbolising the concept of Rhythmic Vitality in modern and visual expression

Based on this study, if a better approach to our cultural tradition continues not by just superficial and external way, but by serious research and understanding of its underlying ideology, philosophy, aesthetics and cultural phenomena, a variety of measures to express the cultural identity of Korea and development of process can be expected in the further study.

Such re-interpretation of traditional culture and visual study of its symbolisation are essential in relation to the development and sustainability of cultural heritages for preserving ethnicity.
