은유에 대한 철학적 연구

요약

이 논문은 은유의 본질을 탐구하는 것을 목표로 한다. 은유는 매우 일상적인 언어의 사용 방식이지만 그 근본 원리를 파악하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 이 논문에서는 세 가지 측면에서 은유의 본질에 접근하고자 한다. 첫째, 은유가 우리 마음에 어떤 상태를 야기하는지를 다루는 은유적 경험에 대한 고찰

둘째, 이러한 상태로부터 어떻게 합리적인 내용을 끌어낼 수 있는지를 고민하는 은유적 의미에 대한 고찰

그리고 셋째, 이러한 과정에서 언어는 어떤 역할을 하는지에 주목하는 은유적 매체에 대한 고찰이 그것이다. 은유적 경험에 대한 고찰은 먼저 은유를 이해하는 과정에 동반되는 독특한 비교의 경험에 대한 것이다. 은유는 두 대상에 대한 비교를 통해 새로운 닮음을 파악하는 과정이며 비대칭성과 불가역성을 나타낸다는 점에서 일반적인 비교와 구분된다. 또한 은유적 비교에서는 객관적으로 두드러진 공통점이 없는 두 대상으로부터 닮음을 찾아야 하기 때문에 두 대상뿐 아니라 두 대상과 관련된 체계에 속하는 속성들을 포괄적으로 고려해야 한다는 특징이 있다. 은유적 비교에는 속성들뿐 아니라 사회 문화적 가치와 함축, 개인적 연상, 정서 등의 요소들도 개입되기 때문에 이러한 비교 과정에서 명확한 내용을 파악하기는 매우 어려워 보인다. 하지만 두 대상에 대한 비교로부터 분명한 내용을 파악하는 것이 불가능한 것은 아니기에 이를 위한 다양한 이론적 시도들이 있었다. 이것은 은유의 본질을 탐구하기 위한 두 번째 측면인 은유적 의미에 대한 고찰에서 다루는 내용이다. 은유적 의미에 대한 연구는 순수하게 언어적 규칙을 통해 은유적 의미를 설명하려는 시도와 은유적 비교의 과정을 은유적 의미에 연관시키려는 시도로 나뉘는데, 첫째 방법은 은유적 의미를 너무 빈약하게 만든다는 단점이 있고 둘째 방법은 의미의 개념을 모호하게 만드는 문제가 있기에 모두 부적절한 방식이라 평가할 수 있다. 은유적 의미에 대한 접근은 은유 경험 전체를 언어적 의미로 환원시키려고 시도하기 보다는 은유 경험 중 언어적 표현을 허용하는 부분과 그렇지 않은 부분이 있음을 인정하고 언어적 표현을 허용하는 부분에 한해서 의미론적인 설명을 제시하는 것이 바람직하다. 은유적 매체로서의 언어에 대한 탐구는 은유의 가장 흥미로운 특징들을 드러낸다. 은유에 사용된 단어는 관습적으로 그것과 연결된 의미뿐 아니라 그 아래에 있는 의미들의 체계, 더 나아가 사회 문화적 함축까지 모두 포함한다. 은유에 사용된 단어의 이러한 특징은 그것을 동일한 뜻을 갖는 다른 단어로 대체할 수 없게 만들고 관련된 의미 체계를 통해 새로운 은유로 확장될 수 있도록 한다. 무엇보다 은유의 가장 독특한 점은 은유를 이해한 후에도 여전히 축자적 의미가 작용하는 것처럼 느껴지는 이중성의 경험이다. 이것은 은유의 가장 본질적인 특징임에도 불구하고 많은 이론들이 이것을 설명하는 데 어려움을 드러낸다. 이 논문에서는 이러한 은유의 특성을 설명하기 위해서는 의미에 개념적 특성뿐 아니라 이미지적 특성이 포함되어야 한다고 주장한다. 이것은 개념 의미론의 핵심적인 부분이기에 이 논문에서는 개념 의미론이 은유 이론의 훌륭한 근거가 될 뿐 아니라 그 자체로 올바른 의미 이론이라고 주장한다.

Abstract

A Philosophical Study on Metaphor : the relation between language and concept

This study aims at investigating the nature of metaphor. Though metaphor is a very common way of using language, its not easy to understand its underlying principle. This study tries to approach the nature of metaphor in three aspects. First, it investigates an experience of metaphor which is a mental state occurred by metaphor. Second, it examines metaphorical meaning that is a rational content derived from the experience of metaphor. And third, it considers the role of language as a metaphorical medium. First, with regard to metaphorical experience, it is a unique experience of comparison, accompanying with the process of understanding metaphor. Metaphor is a process in which we capture a fresh resemblance between two objects and is different from usual comparison in that it is asymmetrical and irreversible. In metaphorical comparison, we need to find resemblance between two objects that share no salient property, so we should consider properties that belong not only to two objects but also to their related systems. Metaphorical comparison includes social/cultural value and connotations, personal association, emotion etc. as well as properties, and it seems that this fact makes it more difficult to capture clear content from comparative experience of metaphor. However, it doesnt mean that it is impossible to capture clear content from comparison, therefore there has been many attempts to explain this process theoretically. It is the second theme of the investigation of the nature of metaphor, that is the metaphorical meaning. Studies on metaphorical meaning could take two different approaches, the first one depends on purely linguistic principle, but it makes the metaphorical meaning too thin, on the other hand, the other approach includes the process of metaphorical comparison in the explanation of metaphorical meaning, but it makes the concept of meaning too vague. Therefore these two approaches are evaluated as inappropriate. When it comes to metaphorical meaning, it would be better to admit the distinction between linguistically expressible and inexpressible parts of metaphorical experience and give semantic explanation only to linguistically expressible part rather than to try to reduce the entire experience of metaphor into linguistic meaning. Investigation of language as metaphorical medium reveals the most interesting feature of metaphor. The words used in metaphorical sentence are related not only with their conventional meaning but also with underlying system of their meaning, and even social/cultural value and connotations. And this very feature of words makes it impossible to replace them with their synonymy and enable them to expand the metaphor into new one through related system of meaning. Most of all, the experience of twofoldness, in which literal meaning remains active even after the metaphorical meaning is grasped, is the most unique feature of metaphor. Even though it is the most essential feature of metaphor, many theories fail to explain it. I argue that meaning should include spatial structure as well as conceptual structure in order to be able to explain this feature. This is the main theme of conceptual semantics, so I argue that conceptual semantics could be proper basis for theory of metaphor and it is a correct theory of meaning by itself.
