Runnability Assessment of Vehicle on Bridge for Cross Wind

- This paper presents a method for assessing vehicle runnability on a bridge with respect to wind direction, vehicle characteristics, and bridge girder shape.
The assessment method is composed of three steps. The first step estimate the critical wind speeds of vehicles for 16 wind directions. To estimate the critical wind speed, vehicle dimensions and aerodynamic coefficients are used. Critical wind speed is estimated for sideslip and overturning accidents.
The second step involves the derivation of probability distribution models. In this study, wind data observed for a period of 30 years were obtained from the nearest weather station to the bridge site. Wind tunnel tests were also performed to measure the effect of girder shape on wind reduction.
Lastly, the number of exceedance days which, the risk index, was calculated by using the results from the first and second steps. Number of exceedance days can be estimated for each lane and the relative risks between wind directions can also be compared. In addition, the influence of some parameters on runnability was examined in which vehicle speed, vehicle type, and loading weight were investigated.
