Abstract
The purpose of the study is to verify the effect that CEO type has on the relation between the TMT background diversity and R&D spending. Many of the earlier studies discuss the effects of multiple factors such as internal and external environments in investigating the influence that TMT exercises on corporate strategy and performance, but do not discuss CEO who makes the final decision in a business. While most of the theses are about the influence that the TMT background diversity has on R&D spending, a CEO is perceived as playing a central role of making the core decisions in a company, performing the crucial part in the effective formation of the management. In this light, the study considers CEO types by dividing them into owner CEO and professional CEO, and examines what difference the characteristics of different CEOs make. To be specific, the study differs from the existing studies by verifying the effect on the relation between the independent variable(TMT background diversity) and the dependent variable(R&D spending) while taking CEO type as the moderating variable.
For this, 115 companies listed on the securities market in 2010 were selected for a verification, which shows that the diversity of TMT backgrounds has positive significant influence on R&D spending, and that while CEO type is used as the moderating variable, with an owner CEO, the influence of the TMT background diversity on R&D spending has decreased.
