Abstract

This is a study to describe how my perception of the world has been changing and through what process it has been expressed in my art works, focusing on the ones produced from 2005 to 2012. To this end, I adopted the concept of Zhuang-Zi(莊子), called deconstructive communication'.

The motive of my creative works has grown from the perception of Self' and the world'. To discover my self-identity, I saw myself calmly and objectively with a contemplative perspective by separating myself from the world. In the process of that observation, I came up with a way to draw self-portraits, into which I objectified myself. However, observing my outer surfaces thoroughly, I realized that my identity could not actually be separated into outer area and inner space. Based on that realization, I tried to express my outer and inner self through contemplating Chuan-Shen Theory(傳神論)'. It is a traditional oriental painting theory which explains about the process to express the mind(神)' through the images(形)'. From that time on, I deconstructed the relationship between my outer and inner self and between myself and the world, trying to get free of dichotomy. As a result, I came to have a mind beyond myself, accepting everything as it is. I began to see myself with an empty mind' without any purpose or judgments, by deconstructing the personality and perspective which had come from the logic of relationship with the others. The Rabbit mankind' self-portraits, produced at this period of time, are the result of my efforts to express the appearance of individual self(單獨者)' representing a person who recovered the mirroring mind', which is a concept borrowed from Zhuang-Zi. This change of perception brought me a broader perspective, and then I went further, expanding the scope of my expressions through life-drawing the appearances of nature.

Zhuang-Zi tried to achieve the harmonious world where all the individual beings interact fluidly with one another without any discriminations or judgments, each experiencing change. The concept of Dao(道: way)' is essential to achieve this harmonious world'. To explain this concept, he discusses Dai-dui(待對: to get along and depend on each other)', which is made from the causal relationship with the others, through many types of anecdotes. And then, he puts the causal relationships into opposition and deconstruct them, using the duality of language.

He also suggests a Hinge(道樞) of Dao(道)' as an important concept to explain the way of communication that moves around the boundaries. He discusses the Practical Dao(道)' which can be practiced daily in human lives, by illustrating Paodingjieniu(庖丁解牛)' as an analogy about practicing this principle. The concept of Practical Dao(道)' is closely related to the oriental painting theories, which emphasize to maintain the consistency' of taking actions and intentions without any temporal gap in between through cultivating one's mind. In this paper, therefore, I described how I used the concept of Practical Dao(道)' to express my ideas deconstructively in my drawings and paintings with brush and ink, focusing on the brush movements and the principles of compositions.
