Despite its enduring place in American gothic literature, gothic space has received little critical attention. This thesis aims to explore the mechanism of power within gothic space, focusing on its unique physical characteristics. In particular, it focuses on house, the predominant form of gothic space in American gothic, and considers the related issues of women, domesticity and family. Based on the premise that such issues are inseparable from the way gothic house is constructed, this thesis will examine how the institution of nuclear family in capitalist American society around the 50s-70s is experimented with and crumbles within gothic spaces represented in Shirley Jacksons The Haunting of Hill House and Stephen Kings The Shining.
The first chapter argues that Hill House both provokes and betrays Eleanors desire to be in a family relationship through its doubleness. The unusual inner structure of Hill House appears to promise Eleanor an opportunity to build a nuclear familiar relationship that has been denied to her. Nonetheless, the space gradually contradicts Eleanors plans for a new family, driving her to desperation. Eleanors last attempt to break down the barrier which shuts her out only results in her violent death, and Hill House remains as an overwhelming gothic space as before.
The second chapter focuses on the disintegration of the Torrance family, which dramatizes the implosion of gothic space due to its doubleness. The Overlook Hotel is built upon the doubleness of capitalist system which divides a homogenous social space into work and home place. Such doubleness makes the system to be self-contradictory by not acknowledging the economic value of domestic labor while depending upon it to sustain the system. The off-season Overlook is the gothic space where this contradiction gradually intensifies and ultimately leads to the spaces self-destruction along with the Torrance family.
Gothic space is not merely an arena where psychological, social or historical metaphors inhabit. It is a concrete existence which asserts power to individuals within, as the unique structures of gothic space in Hill House and The Shining exhibit.
