독립협회 정체 연구

Abstract

이 논문의 목적과 의미는 독립협회라는 것을 원래의 모습으로 돌려놓고, 그 물체를 개념화하는데 있다. 그동안 독립협회에 관한 연구는 다수 있어왔지만 다양한 흐름들로 이뤄진 독립협회는 각각의 연구에 따라 서로 상이한 존재의 모습으로 파악됐다. 기존의 연구들은 개인의 연구 목적에 따라 연구 대상 및 방법을 설정하여 독립협회를 분열시켜 가까이 들여다보았다. 근대화의 과업을 완수할 주체가 독립협회라고 본 학자들이 있었던 반면, 반대의 시각으로 독립협회는 근대성을 갖지 않았던 존재라고 비판하는 연구들도 있었다. 이 近視眼的시각(les courts-voyeurs)은 대상의 문제의식에 따라 정교하게 分析하는 것에 한계가 있음에도 불구하고 이후 종합의 원리에서 독립협회의 존재를 묻는 물음을 궁극적으로 제시했다. 선행연구들의 도움으로 필자는 절단된 시각을 넘어 가장 궁극적인 질문인 독립협회가 무엇이었는지 답하고자 했다.

독립협회(獨立協會, Independence Club)는 1896년 7월 2일 창립되어 1898년 12월 25일 해체됐다. 창립부터 해체까지 독립협회는 다양한 흐름으로 이뤄져 있었다. 흐름들, 무규정(apeiron)상태, 또는 독립협회를 형성했던 다양한 質料들은 근대성을 축으로 흩어 분열된 독립협회의 존재를 투영했고, 기존연구들에 따라 규정되고 이용됐던 독립협회의 정체는 각기 연구 목적에 따라 절단된 시각(coupure)으로 설명할 수 있었다. 흐름과 절단, 배치, 그리고 변형과정을 가졌던 독립협회는 G. Deleuze와 P.Guattari가 말했던 다양체(multiplicité)식의 존재를 표현(expression)하고 있었다. 독립협회는 협회 내에 중심, 주체, 또는 객체도 없이 창설이후부터 지속적으로 협회의 존재의 차이를 생산해 냈다. 창립시기(1896.7.2.~1897.8.28.), 토론회 개최시기(1897.8.29.~1898.2.26.), 구국선언상소시기(1898.2.27.~1898.10.28.), 관민공동회시기(1898.10.29.~1898.12.9.), 해산시기(1898.12.10.~1898.12.25.)의 다섯 시기를 통해 초창기 독립협회의 주도 세력과 관민공동회를 거처 해산에 이르기 까지 협회 내 회원들의 다양한 속성에 따른 정체의 변용을 관찰 수 있었다. 독립협회의 탄생과 해체는 자연의 한 조각일 뿐이었다.

본 논문에서 독립협회의 심층을 들여다보아 독립협회는 무엇인가.를 답하고자 했다. 이들 과연 어떤 존재고, 어떻게 창설됐고, 어떻게 해체됐는가? 독립협회의 기존연구를 살펴봄으로 문제를 발견했고, 독립협회의 진정한 정체에 대해 알고자 했다. 독립협회가 해체되고 한 세기가 지나 현대를 살아가고 있는 우리들은 독립협회의 각기 다른 모습들을 인식하고 장님 코끼리 만지듯 협회의 정체를 그려왔다. 왜 이러한 다양한 존재가 한국사회에 그려지고 비춰졌는지에 관해선 또 다른 연구가 필요할 것이다. 그러나 본 연구는 지금까지 독립협회의 형체와 변형과정을 目睹하여 그 정체를 밝혀봤다는데 궁극적으로 함의가 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to reassess many perspectives (1959~2013) that have been offered in the academic literature on Independence Club, and ultimately conceptualize the entity of it. Independence Club was formed from different flows and these have been each differently understood and interpreted according to the purpose of each different study. Most of the studies established the purpose and method of their studies, cutting and dividing the entity of Independence Club according to their way of understanding the entity as near-seers (les courts-voyeurs). The main early studies represented Independence Club as a movement which played a pivotal role in establishing the modern nation-state system. On the other hand, other studies claimed the truth of this movement's modernity wasn't clearly established yet.

Near-seers understanding of Independence Club shows their limitations in elaborately analyzing the segmented entity, while failing to express the full body of the Club by synthesizing these disparate and dismembered elements constructing different flows of the entity. At the same time, however, their limitations opened the question asking what Independence Club actually is. This study aims to answer this ultimate question beyond the near-seers dismembered gazes.

Independence Club was established on July 2, 1896, and disbanded on December 25, 1898. From establishment to dissolution, Independence Club was constructed of many different flows. Flows (apeiron) or various matter (matière) expressed the dispersed and divided entity of Independence Club at the axis of modernization, which made many perspectives break down (coupure) the full body of the Club.

After going through flows, break, assemblage, and transformation through entirely different events, Independence Club showed forth a new expression of multiplicity(multiplicité), a concept that was created by the theory of G. Deleuze and P.Guattari. The Club sustainably produced changes in its entity from the beginning without a center, a subject, or an object during following five times - the establishment of independence club(1896.7.2.~1897.8.28.), the debating forum(1897.8.29.~1898.2.26.) , the memorial to the throne(1898.2.27.~1898.10.28.), the official and peoples assembly(1898.10.29.~1898.12.9.), the dissolution of the club(1898.12.10.~1898.12.25.). The new expression of multiplicities of the Club was the affection for the entity constructed of different flows of club members. The birth and death of Independence Club was just infinitesimal parts of nature in the late 19th Century Korea.

The main concern of this research is to witness the essence of Independence Club, and ultimately answer what Independence Club is. How was the Club established and disbanded? Many studies have presented Independence Club as blind men touching an elephant. No one has answered the question about the essence of the entity of Independence Club constructed of different flows as a part of the late 19th Century Korea. The essence of the entity of Independence Club filled with different flows and events, was the new multiplicities eventually expressed.
