루만의 '사회적 질서' 문제의 해명에 관한 연구

국문초록

이 연구는 루만의 사회적 체계의 일반이론에 기초하여 사회학의 출현 이후 사회학의 핵심 문제였던 사회적 질서의 문제를 검토하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 때 사회적 질서가 어떻게 가능한가라는 질문의 형식이 어떻게 가능한지를 해명하면서, 이 문제를 제기하고 그에 대한 답변을 제출했던 사회학의 전통이 자기지시적 체계이론으로 전환되어야 한다는 점을 분명히 할 것이다. 이를 위해, 본 연구는 서론에서 루만의 자기지시적 체계이론을 전체적으로 조망하고, 그런 기반에서 근대 사회의 사회적 질서가 어떻게 문제로 제기되고, 이 문제를 어떻게 관찰하고 이론화할 수 있는지 보여줄 것이다. 이는 본 연구의 이론적 전경(全景)이기도 하다. 2장에서는 사회적 질서 문제에 대한 사회학의 전통을 사회학의 운명이라는 문제설정으로 규정하면서, 사회적 질서의 문제와 사회학의 출현을 다룬다. 이를 통해 이후 사회적 질서의 문제에 대한 사회학의 전통을 수립한 뒤르켐의 논의를 살펴본다. 3장은 이런 전통을 염두에 두면서, 또 4장에서 본격적으로 해명될 사회적 질서의 문제에 앞서 루만이 정식화한 사회학에서의 자기지시적 체계이론으로의 패러다임 전환을 다룬다. 이런 맥락에서 본 장은 부분-전체 도식에 대한 비판, 자기지시적 역설을 관찰하기 위한 형식, 이러한 역설이 전개되는 세 양상으로서 자기지시적 체계의 분화, 진화, 소통의 연관과 사회학적 계몽에 대해 살펴본다. 마지막으로 3장은 4장에서 본격적으로 논의될 사회적 질서와 사회적 체계의 문제가 자기지시적 관찰의 방법인 사회학적 계몽을 통해서 이른바 사회학의 위기에 이론적으로 대처할 수 있다는 점을 확인할 것이다. 따라서 3장은 루만의 사회적 체계의 일반이론의 논리 및 그에 따른 자기지시적 체계의 작동의 형식을 집중적으로 다루기 때문에, 루만의 사회학적 계몽의 방법으로 사회적 질서의 문제를 다루는 4장에 진입하기 위해 필수적인 장이기도 하다. 이어 4장은 3장에서 다룬 문제의식에 기반해서, 사회적 질서의 문제를 사회의 단위의 문제와의 연관 속에서 해명한다. 즉, 이 장은 사회 안에서 사회를 관찰하고 기술한다는, 그래서 사회적 질서 역시 사회적 체계의 작동 내부에서 가능하다는 루만의 문제의식을 구체적으로 검토하게 된다. 이는 사회적 질서를 자기지시적인 사회적 체계의 문제로 파악하고, 그 문제는 사회학적 계몽에 따른 방법으로만 관찰하고 기술할 수 있다는 루만의 사회적 체계의 일반이론에 따르는 것이다. 따라서 4장은 본 연구에 있어서 핵심적인 장이 된다. 이를 분석적으로 살펴보기 위해 이 장은 사회적 질서의 근대적 조건을 근대 사회의 구조변동의 두 측면, 즉 근대적 시간 구조의 출현과 근대 사회의 기능적 분화를 살펴본다. 이후, 사회적 질서 뿐 아니라, 사회적 관계를 구성하는 기본적 단위로서 이중의 우연성의 문제를 베버→파슨스→루만의 계열을 중심으로 추적한다. 이중의 우연성은 근대 사회의 구조 변동에서 경험과 행위를 어떻게 사회학적으로 이론화할 것인가의 문제이기도 하지만, 다른 한편으로는 사회적 체계와 사회적 질서의 창발을 가능하게 하는 사회적인 단위라는 점을 분명히 하면서, 그 연관 속에서 소통과 의미체계를 다룬다. 이후 사회적 체계의 진화의 맥락에서 사회적 질서의 여러 측면들, 즉 사회적 질서의 관찰, 사회적 질서의 사회적 형식 그리고 사회적 질서와 사회의 자기기술을 검토한다. 그러므로, 본 연구는 사회적 질서는 자기지시적인 사회적 체계의 창발과 재생산을 통해 가능하다고 해명한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 기능적으로 분화된 사회적 체계의 재생산을 통해서 근대 사회의 사회적 질서는 진화하며, 이는 사회적 체계의 진화, 즉 사회의 자기기술에 다름 아님을 보일 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 질서의 사회적인 성격과 그렇게 창발한 사회적 질서가 고유한 구조를 가지면서, 자기 변화하는 자기지시적인 사회적 체계를 통해 진화한다는 점을 이론화한다. 이런 의미에서 사회적 질서는 사회적 체계의 진화를 통해 가능하고 재생산하며, 이러한 근대 사회의 역사는 곧 사회의 자기 기술의 역사이며, 사회적 체계의 진화로서 사회적 질서의 역사가 된다.

This study has the focused aim to elucidate the problem of social order, the fore one of sociology after its emergence, on the theoretical basis of Niklas Luhmanns general theory of social systems. At this time, examining the form of question, how is social order possible?, this research makes sure that the tradition of sociology concerned this problem should be transformed into the self-referential system theory. For this purpose, after prospecting the whole scape of Luhmanns self-referential system theory at the first chapter, then this article shows that how the social order in modern society could be the problem and how this fundamental problem could be observed by Luhmanns system theory. At the second chapter, considering the tradition of social order in modern society as the fate of sociology, this study deals with the problem of social order and the emergence of sociology. This is followed by the argument of Durkheims theory of establishing the legacy of sociology. The third chapter handles the paradigm shift into the self-referential system theory on the one hand, on the basis of the previous chapter and on the other, for the basis of the elucidating the problem of social order in the next chapter. This includes that the critique of so-called parts-whole scheme, a form to observe the self-referential paradox, the connection of the differentiation, evolution and communication as the three modes of unfolding this paradox and the sociological enlightenment. At last, this chapter will confirm that only the self-referential method of observation is it possible to cope with the crisis of sociology and its theories. Then, the fourth chapter elucidates the problem of social order with relation of the unity of society on the ground suggested by the third chapter. In other words, just because the previous chapter concentrates on the logic of the general theory of social systems and the form of the self-referential system, this chapter can exclusively shed the light on the fact that the social order in modern society could be observed and described only by the self-referential social systems. This is the reason why the fourth chapter is the essential one at this study. To examine this theoretical purpose, this chapter focuses on the two aspects of the structural transformation in modern society, namely the emergence of the temporal structure of time in modern society and the functional differentiation of the modern society. After that, the crucial social unity, double contingency, which not only constructs the social relations, but also the social order and society itself will be explored. It is much important due to the fact that double contingency is related with the problem how the action and experience in modern society could be theorized. Whats more, only the unfolding the paradox of the self-referential form in double contingency can there be the emergence of the social order and social systems. Without this unfolding the paradox of self-reference, there cannot be communication and the meaning system. So, the major issue is not how to achieve practical improvements but how to answer a theoretical question that arises prior to any improvement, namely, how can an order be created or generated and reproduced that transforms the impossible into the possible and the improbable into the probable. On top of that, in the context of the evolution of social systems, the problem will be issued that includes the observation of social order, the forms of social order and social order and self-description of society. At last, this exploration of Luhmanns social order problem makes it clear that social order in modern society can be possible and reproduced only by the emergence of the self-referential social systems. For these reasons, the forms of social order have the evolutionary mechanism that makes it possible to generate its own structural change and transformation only in its inner reproduction. And this evolution of social order and the unfolding the paradox of form of functional differentiation is the historical name for the self-description of society produced only by the difference between system and its environment.
