탈사회주의 이후 발트의 소비에트 정체성 : 1960~70년대 에스토니아 예술을 중심으로

Abstract

This article sheds light on the paradoxical predicament that the Baltics were falling into face during the social transition period after liberation from the Soviet Union in 1991. With the exaltation of nationalism, the Soviet past tended to be seen as an evil that damaged so called pure national identities of the Balt nations. On the other hand, the Soviet colonialism studies recently surfaced argues that the Soviet regime during the Soviet era should not be seen an object of resistance, rather, it was an ordinary condition within which people in this region lived their lives through concealment, escape, camouflage, negotiation, collusion etc.. Baltic art reveals well this convoluted conspirational relation between the Baltics and the Soviet. Focusing on the experimental aspiration and existential agony seen in the Estonian art in 1960s and 1970s, the article argues that the Soviet past is a part of the identities of the Baltics, which make their post-socialist project more complicated.
