혁명의 서사시: '고요한 돈강'과 '의사 지바고'의 장르 비교

Abstract

본 논문에서는 숄로호프의 '고요한 돈강'과 파스테르나크의 '의사 지바고'를 혁명의 서사시라는 장르적 연관성 속에서 비교, 분석하였다. 혁명과 내전은 거대한 역사적 변혁의 시기인 만큼 소비에트의 작가들은 넓은 시간적, 공간적 스펙트럼 안에서 벌어지는 다양한 사건과 사람들의 삶을 문학적으로 구현해 내려 했으며, 이러한 의도를 가장 잘 반영하는 문학적 장르가 서사시이다. 본 논문에서는 작가의 정치성향이나 작품의 예술적 우월성 문제는 차치하고 혁명의 서사시로서 두 작품이 어떠한 문학적 성과를 이루어내는지를 살펴보았다. 혁명과 더불어 진정한 인간으로 성장하는 그리고리와 혁명으로 인해 자신의 예술을 완성하는 지바고는 모두 이 시대를 살아간 사람들의 삶의 모습을 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 물론 이 두 작품을 같은 의미의 서사시적 산문이라고 보기는 어렵지만, 서사시적 시공간이라는 틀을 사용하여 역사와 인간의 이야기를 하고 있다는 점에서 비교가 가능하다. '고요한 돈강'은 카자크 농민의 모험과 성장을, '의사 지바고'는 지식인이 고난을 거쳐 예술가로 완성되어 가는 반혁명의 과정을 고향 출발-모험-고향으로의 귀환이라는 서사시 구조 속에 그려내고 있기 때문이다.

This study aims at a comparative analysis of the genre of Sholokhovs Quiet Flows the Don and Pasternaks Doctor Zhivago. These novels are historic epics that depict the hardest time in Russian history, the Russian revolution and civil war. In this respect, these novels are compared to Tolstoys epic novel, War and Peace. A Cossack peasant, Grigory Melekhov in Quiet Flows the Don has a question of what is a historical truth, observing the brutality and cruel violence committed by his enemies and also his comrades in World War I and in also the Russian revolution. At last he becomes a person who has sympathy for every living thing. He starts his mental adventure as an ordinary peasant, and finally he turns out to be a morally heroic person overcoming hardships. Of course he is not a hero in terms of traditional epic, but a new type of hero of a revolutionary epic. Doctor Zhivago depicts intelligentsias experiences in the time of revolutionary change. It obviously has the spatial and chronicle forms of epics, or more accurately Tolstoys epic. However, it can be regarded as epic in a very loose sense, because it is primarily concerned with Zhivagos personal life and art. He seeks the truth of life and death with his own views on a history and religion, and eventually gains an immortality in his writing. Zhivago can be regarded as a hero for artists, and in this sense, Doctor Zhivago is an epic of artists, that is a reinterpreted epic in modern terms.
