정치성향에 따른 스포츠선수에 대한 이미지와 태도 차이

Abstract

스포츠선수는 경기력과 외모 등 외형적인 요소들에 의해 자신에 대한 이미지를 형성하게 되고, 스포츠팬들은 이런 이미지를 통해서 선수에 대한 태도를 가지게 된다. 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도는 단순히 외형적인 요소에 의해서만 생기는 것이 아니라 그 선수가 가지고 있는 개인적인 특성들에 의해서도 형성되는데, 정치성향은 개인을 표현할 수 있는 대표적인 특성 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 개인의 정치성향이 정치성향을 띄는 선수와 사회공헌활동의 정치성향에 따라 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도에 어떤 차이가 있는지를 알아보는 것이다. 사전조사를 통해 선수의 정치성향 시나리오 조작 검증을 실시했고, 선수의 정치성향 시나리오와 기부 시나리오를 각각 진보와 보수로 나누어 2*2로 조합하여 총 4가지 유형의 설문을 제작했다. 각 시나리오 제시 후 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도를 측정했다. 총 318명이 설문에 참여했으며, 기술통계분석, 일원·이원 분산분석 및 반복측정 분산분석을 실시했다. 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개인의 정치성향은 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도에 차이를 가져오지 않는다. 둘째, 개인의 정치성향과 일치하는 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도는 더 긍정적이다. 셋째, 기부는 개인과 선수의 정치성향에 관계없이 긍정적인 행동으로 인식된다. 넷째, 진보 성향이 강한 집단은 보수 성향 집단보다 다른 정치성향의 선수에 대해 더 배타적인 입장을 갖는다. 본 연구는 정치성향을 이용하여 선수에 대한 이미지와 태도를 파악한 최초의 시도로써 그 학문적 의의가 크다고 할 수 있으며, 선수의 정치성향을 팀 및 선수에 대한 마케팅 요소로 활용할 수 있는 이론적 배경을 제공했다는 점에서 실무적 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

The image of an athlete is formed based on his or her performance as well as personal aspects such as appearance while sport fans form attitudes about the athlete based on their images. However, an athletes image and fans attitudes are not based entirely on external characteristics. Rather, how an athlete is perceived by fans can also be influenced by the athletes inherent aspects. Political orientation is one of the most inherent features that people use to both display as well as make inferences about others. Furthermore, athletes are often involved in many donation activities that can, in themselves, carry a particular political orientation. Therefore the purpose of the current study was to explore how the alignment or misalignment of an individuals political orientation with the athletes political orientation and charitable activitys political orientation affect the perceived image and attitude regarding the athlete. A pilot study was conducted as a manipulation check to confirm that the athletes political orientation was adequately inferred by participants. The main study was conducted with a 2 (progressive donation activity vs. conservative donation activity) X 2 (progressive athlete vs. conservative athlete) experimental design. Data was collected from 318 participants through random selection and were divided into four groups based on their political orientations. Data analysis was conducted using analysis of variance to test for significant differences amongst groups. First, the athletes image and attitude showed no significant differences between the participants personal political orientation groups. Secondly, participants evaluation of the image and attitude is more positive when the participants and athletes political orientation is aligned. Thirdly, the donation activity is perceived as a positive act regardless of the athletes political orientation. Lastly, the strong progressive group reported the least favorable perceptions about the athlete when their political orientation was misaligned with their own. This study is the first to utilize political orientation in a sport setting. Moreover, the current study holds practical relevance by displaying that political orientation could be a factor to be used as a marketing tool for sport teams and athletes.
