비지류(碑誌類) 산문을 활용한 전기 쓰기 교육 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 전통적인 글쓰기 양식의 하나인 비지류(碑誌類) 산문을 활용하여 전기 쓰기 교육을 위한 내용을 마련하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 비지류 산문은 죽은 이의 삶을 지석(誌石)에 새겨 전하는 글로서 전기에 속하는 글쓰기 장르이다. 비지류 산문이 전기 쓰기 교육에서 유의미한 교육 내용이 될 수 있는 것은 전기로서 비지류 산문이 가지는 특징이 쓰기 교육에서 전기 쓰기가 가지는 교육적 의미를 구현하는 데에 유용하기 때문이다. 전기 쓰기는 자료에 근거해서 대상을 해석하는 활동이며, 자료를 활용한 표현 능력이 중요한 글쓰기이다. 그리고 대상 인물과 밀접한 관계를 통해 필자의 의식 성장을 기대할 수 있는 글쓰기라는 점에서 쓰기 교육에서 그 의미를 갖는다. 비지류 산문은 엄격한 형식을 바탕으로 구조화된 내용 생성 방법을 가지고 있는데, 이는 인물에 대한 자료들을 해석해야 하는 학습자에게 구조화된 인물 탐구 방식을 제시해 줄 수 있다. 또한, 비지류 산문은 단형(短型) 전기로서 그 안에 인물의 면모를 담아내고자 정제된 표현 방법을 구사하였는데, 이는 학습자가 쓰는 전기의 표현 전략으로 활용될 수 있다. 마지막으로, 비지류 산문의 필자는 비지류 산문이 갖는 상례(喪禮)의 측면과 비지류 산문을 청탁한 청탁자, 다수의 잠재적 독자 등 여러 소통 맥락을 고려한 균형적인 서술을 해야 했는데, 이는 전기 쓰기를 하는 학습자가 견지해야 할 서술 태도의 기준으로 제안될 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 옛 글을 답습하지 않는 글쓰기를 추구한 김창협과 박지원의 비지류 산문을 오늘날 전기 쓰기 교육의 전범(典範)으로 보고 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 크게 세 가지 측면에서 분석하였는데, 첫째, 비지류 산문의 내용 생성 원리를 살펴보았다. 비지류 산문은 공동체의 규범적 가치를 고려하여 필자의 경험을 중심으로 수집한 자료에서 인물의 전형(典型)을 발견하고 있다. 둘째, 비지류 산문의 표현 전략을 시간 구성, 인물 형상화, 인물 평가의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 비지류 산문은 인물의 행적을 가치를 중심으로 배열하여 내용의 응집성을 구현하고, 인물을 형상화하는 방법으로 인물의 면모를 잘 드러내는 핵심적인 발언, 장면, 일화 등을 활용하였다. 인물 평가에서는 대상 인물에 대한 차별적 관점을 제시해서 그 인물이 기록으로 전할 만하다는 것을 정당화하고 있다. 셋째, 비지류 산문에 대한 김창협과 박지원의 글쓰기 시각에 대해서 살펴보았다. 이들은 공동체의 담화 관습을 중시하면서도 효과적인 의사소통을 위해 그것을 변형하여 상투적인 글쓰기를 벗어나 개성적인 글쓰기를 추구하였고, 진실성을 중시하는 태도를 필자 스스로 견지하려고 하였다. 비지류 산문의 글쓰기 원리가 실제 전기 쓰기 교육에 적용되기 위해 학습자가 쓴 전기를 검토하였다. 중세의 비지류 산문의 글쓰기 방식을 그대로 전기 쓰기에 도입할 수는 없기 때문에 교육 현장에서 학습자의 전기 쓰기 실태에 대한 경험적 연구를 바탕으로 비지류 산문의 활용 가능성을 모색하기 위함이다. 검토한 내용을 바탕으로 전기 쓰기 과정 가운데 내용 생성 원리, 표현 전략, 점검하기의 측면을 전기 쓰기 교수·학습의 주안점으로 보고 해당 쓰기 과정에서 전기 쓰기의 원리를 설명할 때 전범으로서 비지류 산문을 활용하도록 제안하였다. 이를 통해 학습자가 능동적인 내용 생성 활동을 할 수 있도록 돕고, 전기 쓰기에 효과적인 표현 방법을 제공하며, 자신의 글을 점검할 때 필요한 기준을 제시해 주고자 하였다. 이때 중세의 일급 문인과 학습자의 글쓰기 수준 차이를 고려하여 비지류 산문의 글쓰기 원리와 관련지어서 설명할 수 있는 현대의 전기를 함께 활용해서 학습자의 이해를 돕도록 하였다. 그동안 학교 교육에서 전기를 읽고 쓰는 활동이 많이 이루어졌지만, 쓰기 교육에서 전기 쓰기가 가지는 교육적 의미를 고려한 교수·학습 방안이 마련되지는 못하였다. 이 연구는 학교 교육에서 교육내용의 대상으로 거의 삼지 않았던 비지류 산문을 활용하여 전기 쓰기의 교육적 의미를 실현할 수 있는 교수·학습 방안을 설계하고, 중세에 활발하게 지어졌던 비지류 산문이 쓰기 교육에서 가지는 가치를 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a method of writing biographies with epitaphs based on the Korean traditional writing mode. Epitaphs are writings carved on a memorial stone that describe the deceased, and are thus classified as biographies. Epitaphs are meaningful educational objects in biography writing education. Writing biography is an interpretational activity based on the data of one's life. Expressional ability using the data is important in writing biography. The development of the writer's consciousness is also expected to occur since writing biography requires a close relationship between the subject and the writer. The writing of epitaphs requires the generation of contents structured on strict formality. Therefore, writing epitaphs provides learners with a structured means of exploring character as they interpret a wealth of data about their subjects. Because epitaphs indicate a persons personality in such a small amount of space, they require the writer to possess a refined ability of expression. Thus, writing epitaphs can be used as a strategy for the learner to develop their biography writing skills. Lastly, writers of epitaphs ought to achieve a balanced attitude of writing to consider a number of communication contexts, such as funeral rites, people who request the writer to write a manuscript, and many other latent readers. It can therefore be suggested that learners adhere to certain standards of writing attitude when they write biographies. This study analyzes Chang-hyeop Kims and Ji-won Parks writings. They had a firm understanding of epitaphs and sought a new style of writing distinguishable from traditional writing. For these reasons, their writings can serve as todays educational model of biography. This study analyzes and identifies three main characteristics of their writings. First, considering the communitys normative values, they find the personal model, which is gathered from the writers experiences as a generating method. Second, the strategies of expression in epitaphs can be classified by time arrangements, characterization of the person, and evaluation of the person. Epitaphs arrange one's actions in terms of value so that they can implement cohesion. And they capture one's essential aspects of speech, scene and episode that help to understand the person as a way of characterizing the person. In evaluating the subject, they justify the persons life as being important enough to be written as a biography by suggesting a biased view of the person in contrast to his general reputation. Third, in terms of the attitudes of writing, they change the form to convey meanings effectively to their readers, even though Kim and Park followed the form of epitaphs. Also, they continue to place an emphasis on establishing credence with readers and the writers themselves. To apply the principles of writing epitaphs to biography writing education, biographies that learners wrote are examined in this study so as to seek possibilities of using epitaphs which is based on an empiric study of learners' condition of biography writing in the educational field. It is because the way of writing epitaphs in medieval times cannot be adopted as they were in biography writing in this case. Based on the results, this study focuses on the generating method, strategy of expression, and revising in biography writing education and suggests to teachers using epitaphs as an educational model of biography when they explain principles of the biography writing process. It helps learners to generate contents actively, propose effective way of expression, and suggest standard when they check their writings. At this point it should be considered that there is a gap in writing level between first-rate writers in medieval times and learners in this case. So it is needed to use modern biography for helping learners to understand the principles of writing epitaphs. Many activities involving the reading and writing of biographies have been used in the educational field, but they are not based on methodical teaching and learning ways in terms of the educational meaning of writing biography. This study has significance in that it verifies the value of epitaphs in writing education by suggesting the method of using epitaphs, which has not been previously explored in educational fields.
