능호관 이인상 산문 연구

Abstract

본고는 조선후기 문인화가 능호관(凌壺觀) 이인상(李麟祥, 1710~1760)의 산문세계에 대한 연구이다. 본고의 목적은 기존에 잘 알려지지 않았던 문인 이인상의 산문세계를 탐구하여 그가 18세기 문학의 중요한 한 경향을 대표하는 인물임을 밝힘으로써 18세기 문학사의 이해를 심화하는 데에 있다. 그간 18세기 문학 연구는 18세기 후반의 문학에 각별한 관심을 기울여 왔다. 반면 18세기 전반기에 대한 관심은 상대적으로 저조하여 18세기 문학사의 전체상을 이해하는 데 문제가 있었다. 18세기 전반에 주로 활동했던 이인상과 그 벗들은 불우한 존재여건을 바탕으로 처사적 자세를 공유하였으며, 이들의 정신은 다음 세대인 연암 일파에 이르러서도 일정하게 이어졌다. 따라서 이인상에 대한 연구는 18세기 문학사에 대한 이해를 확충하는 작업이자 연암 일파에 대한 심도 있는 이해를 돕는 작업이라 할 수 있다. 미술사 분야에서는 이미 이인상에 대한 연구가 상당히 축적되어 있는데, 대개 그의 이념적 보수성과 서얼의식을 부각시키는 경향이 보인다. 한편 문학 분야의 이인상 연구는 아직 초기단계에 있다. 최근 소개된 가장본 『뇌상관고』(雷象觀藁) 역시 아직 본격적으로 연구되지 못했다. 본고는 『뇌상관고』를 분석 대상에 포함하고 처사문학이라는 관점에서 이인상에 접근함으로써 보다 깊이 있게 그를 이해하고자 하였다. 본고는 크게 네 부분으로 이루어진다. 제Ⅱ장에서는 『능호집』과 『뇌상관고』에 수록된 산문을 문체별로 분류하여 주요 작품의 특징을 살피고, 그의 생애를 수학기·내직기·외직기·은거기의 넷으로 나누어 통시적인 작품 경향을 파악함으로써 이인상 산문의 전모를 제시하였다. 이어서 제Ⅲ장에서는 이인상의 산문 가운데 문예의식이 드러나는 글을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 그 산문의 기저에 중화주의적 세계관과 의리론이 자리하고 있으며, 또한 그가 고문을 선호하면서도 특정 시대의 고문을 오롯한 전범으로 삼는 대신 간결미와 진정성을 중시하는 고문의 미학을 추구하였음을 밝혔다. 제Ⅳ장에서는 이인상의 산문에서 두드러지는 다섯 가지 주제를 분석하였다. 크게 보아 제1, 2, 3절은 인간에 대한 사유를, 제4절과 제5절은 자연과 예술에 관한 태도를 다룬 것이다. 제1절에서는 그가 당대의 우도를 비판적으로 인식하였으며, 벗들과의 상호규계를 지향하면서 깊은 우정을 나누었음을 탐구하였다. 특히 절친한 벗들의 죽음에 대한 글에서 우정을 미학화하는 모습을 살필 수 있었다. 제2절에서는 그가 처사적 인물에 대해 동병상련의 감정을 느끼며 그들의 삶을 현창(顯彰)하는 양상을 분석하였다. 제3절에서는 그가 여성과 노비 등 사회적 약자를 인간적으로 형상화하는 시선을 고찰하였다. 제4절에서는 이인상의 산수벽(山水癖)이 현실에 대한 비판의식에서 기인하는 것임을 밝히고, 그가 문인으로서의 역량과 화가로서의 역량을 조화시켜 산수를 생동감 있게 표현한 양상을 살펴보았다. 제5절에서는 기교보다 정신을 중시하는 이인상의 예술론을 고찰하여, 그가 '흥취'를 창작의 주요한 계기로 삼았음을 해명하였다. 제Ⅴ장에서는 18세기 전반에 국내외의 복잡한 정치 정세로 인해 처사문학이 대두하게 되었음을 밝히고, 이인상이 자기 세대의 처사문인들과 특징을 같이하며 그 영향이 다음 세대인 연암 일파로도 이어지고 있음을 규명하였다.

This thesis investigates the prose works of Lee In-Sang. As a renowned literati painter, Lee has been studied by a few art historians. However, his voluminous literary works have rarely been scrutinized yet. This study aims to demonstrate that Lee represents the literary trend of Cheo-sa(處士) literature in the first half of the 18th century. By doing so, it is expected that the understanding of the 18th-century literature would be deepened and expanded. Lee attached great importance to 'the Righteousness'(義理) and adhered to Sinocentrism(中華主義). Although he followed 'Classical prose'(古文), he did not cling to the prose style of a certain era but advocated concision and sincerity, which are the fundamental principles of Classical prose. Lee's prose works convey five significant themes. Above all, he emphasized morals of friendship. Criticizing the superficial friendship of his time, he stressed the importance of admonition between friends. He also esthetically expressed his affection toward his deceased friends through prose works for funeral orations. Subsequently, He honored Cheo-sa literati with respect. It is also remarkable that he showed sympathy to women and slaves who were the weak in the society. Though Lee did not go further to insist on complete social equality, his way of seeing them is still notable, considering he himself is one of the male literati. In addition to the aforementioned themes regarding people, Lee's attitudes toward nature and arts are worthy of attention, too. He vividly represented mountain landscapes, giving free play to his imagination as a writer and painter. It is noteworthy that his craving to sightsee landscapes originated in his critical understanding of the world. In terms of art, it can be said that he valued spirit above technique. Around the first half of the 18th century, Cheo-sa literature rose up because of the turbulent political situation of the inside and outside of the country. Lee's prose works and other Cheo-sa literati's have some common features. Besides, the spirit of Lee and his associates exerted influence upon their next generation.
