The hippocampus is known for its importance in representing contextual environment. Unique contexts, however, are often vaguely defined in the literature as undisclosed configurations of multimodal stimuli such as different rooms. The current study aimed to develop a new contextual memory task in which well-defined visual contexts should be recognized in order to choose between otherwise identical visual targets on a trial-by-trial basis. In a computer-interfaced LCD-touchscreen environment, rat's responses to the visual targets were registered via a touchscreen monitor in the center and the visual contexts were presented through two peripheral LCD monitors that were located on both sides of the center monitor. Inactivation of the dorsal hippocampus with muscimol severely disrupted performance. The hippocampal-inactivated rats were, however, normal in discriminating object images directly presented in the center screen. The results suggest that the hippocampus is critically involved in conditionally retrieving simple spatial associations using visual contexts in the background and the new task can serve as a powerful behavioral paradigm for investigating how the hippocampus dynamically processes visual contexts in a more controlled fashion.-
