Abstract
After the invention of cameras, war paintings escaped from the burden of keeping an objective 'record' of events, thereby assuming the duty of 'praying for victory in war' or 'agitation' on a war footing.
During the Korean War, war correspondent artists had definite goals of imparting 'anticommunist ideologies' to the public while departing from specific record of battlefield scenes. For those reasons like identity guarantee and settlement of livelihood problems, most artists acted as a war correspondent painter at an art corps or a squad of war correspondent painters under the Ministry of National Defense and the National Association of Cultural Organizations. But, war painting output remained unsatisfactory under military conditions without any operational policy for overall scrutiny of those paintings.
Compared with Japanese war painting of the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War, it is hard to find the vivid scene of battle with enemy or prayer for victory in war painting of the Korean War created by the squad of war correspondent painters. They proved to give a dry and serene portrayal of war circumstances to the maximum extent. Artists of that era point out that there were then few cases of direct service on the front line by the squad of war correspondent painters.
These artists could not fully perform the role of war correspondent painter due to uncooperative attitudes by the military authorities and livelihood hardships of individual artists.
This implied that they failed to secure realistic elements. It became one of reasons behind the absence of war paintings capturing battle scenes.
As a refuge at the Korean War, Busan looked like a seemingly peaceful spot. While experiencing separation and fear of death, artists endured tough times by devoting themselves to artistic creation. Every single facet of individual artworks at that time clearly illustrates the rarity of works that embodied the actual state surrounding the war. This should be construed as not only the absence of historical consciousness as cited by some critics but also passive resistance to the society dominated by anticommunist ideologies. Amid coexistence between those going to North Korea and South Korea, artists could draw a distinction between themselves and the enemy, but it was hard for them to feel emotional sympathy. Anticommunist ideologies prevalent in the society suppressed artists' freedom of expression.
Ultimately, artists began to pursue apolitical arts as their freedom of artistic forms was repressed by anticommunist ideologies. They metaphorically compared confrontation between
South and North Korea to 'rooster' and 'bull.' Consequently, it diluted the function of political propaganda performed by war
paintings. But, artists embraced new types of foreign culture
and institutions and created experimental artworks during this
period, thereby quickly switching to modernist art in the late1950s. In case of Japan where war paintings met the government's demands, they reverted to the prewar status after Japan's defeat in a 15-year war.
It is obvious that war paintings of the Korean War manifest overall lack of thematic consciousness. Rather than voicing fierce criticism about such tendency, however, we should study these war paintings as an introspective creation which reflects the anguish of those artists who could neither pray for victory nor ignore ongoing war conditions in an unprecedentedly fratricidal fight worldwide. This is because the Korean War bears the hallmark of 'fratricidal battle' as distinct from other fights among different ethnicities or countries.
