Identifying the reason for frame losses in IEEE 802.11n Wireless LANs

Abstract

This thesis proposes how to figure out whether frame losses are due to interference, low signal strength, or surrounding mobility. Previous studies utilize the hints from the physical layer to differentiate them at the receiver side. However, these works incur some feedback overheads and require frame modification. In this thesis, we only exploit the MAC layer information of 802.11n. Specifically, we observe that subframe losses have distinct patterns by examining the bitmap of Block ACK frame for each scenario. Based on these observations, we devise a simple algorithm which effectively distinguishes between interference, weak signals, and surrounding mobility.

본 논문은 무선랜 네트워크에서 데이터 프레임이 손실되었을 때 그 원인이 무엇인지 파악하는 방법에 관한 논문이다. 무선에서는 신호세기가 약하거나 주변 단말들의 간섭, 그리고 주변환경의 변화 등에 의해 전송된 프레임이 손실될 수 있다. 기존의 연구들은 이런 원인을 구분하기 위해 수신자 단에서 물리계층의 정보를 얻어 이를 송신자에게 전달해주는 과정을 통해 해결하고자 하였다. 그러나 이런 접근은 피드백에 대한 오버헤드를 수반하고 일반적인 장비에서는 적용이 어렵다는 단점을 가진다. 본 논문에서는 이런 단점을 보완하기 위해 11n 단말들을 구성하고 각 원인에 따른 손실이 독립적으로 발생할 수 있도록 설정한 뒤, Block ACK의 비트맵 패턴을 관찰하였다. 그 결과, 간섭에 의한 손실은 연속적인 전송실패가 주로 관찰되고 약한 신호세기에 의해서는 손실이 독립적으로 나타남을 확인하였다. 우리는 본 결과를 바탕으로 각 손실의 원인을 규정할 수 있는 알고리즘을 제안하였으며, 실제 수집된 데이터에 대해 최대 97%까지 정확하게 원인을 결정할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
