The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of primary teachers' lived-experience of PE assessment. Primary teachers are unique beings who have experienced PE assessments as both students being assessed and teachers assessing. Thus, this study tried to capture primary teachers lived-experience of PE assessment as both student and teacher based on hermeneutic phenomenology procedures. Accordingly, the research questions were set as followed: First, as a student, what is the lived-experience of PE assessment? Second, as a teacher, what is the lived-experience of PE assessment? Third, what is the meaning of assessing PE in primary school?
As theoretical backgrounds, Primary PE, PE assessment, and hermeneutic phenomenology underpinned this study. Followed by hermeneutic phenomenology methodology, this study was conducted for a total of 11 months from August 2018 to June 2019. Participants were selected purposefully. 5 primary teachers who teach and practice PE were selected with an ability to give vivid and rich descriptions of their lived-experience in PE assessment practice. Phenomenological data were collected through phenomenological interviews, lived-experience descriptions(LEDs), observation, teachers reflective journals, and documents related to PE assessment. Phenomenological data was described and analyzed by four existentials(Merleau-Ponty, 2012; van Manen, 1990; 2016b) of human experience such as lived body, lived space, lived time, lived relations. Once lived-experiences were described as they were, hermeneutic process was implemented by researcher. Texts were recreated and reconstructed to provide readers with meaningful resonance(van Manen, 2016b) by researcher. In order to increase the trustworthiness of this study, the researcher utilized triangulation, member checks, and peer debriefing, plus, to guarantee the ethics of this study, this study was approved by Institutional Review Board(IRB).
The results and discussions consist of three to answer the research questions. Result 1, as a student once, their lived experiences of PE assessment were described. Lived-body experiences were thematized by trembling body, body being measured, which elaborates on their bodily experiences when their bodies were trembling and shaking as a result of being measured and graded in PE assessment. Lived-space experiences were thematized by a stage forcing bodily monologue, a space remote from their lives. Lived-time experiences were thematized by in the twinkling of an eye, time not absorbing in which revealed PE assessment moments went by in a flash and didnt draw their enthusiasms in some reasons. Lived-relations experiences were thematized by teacher was drill-sergeant, one-way traffic, which accounts for their vertical and top-down relationship in PE assessment contexts.
Result 2, as a teacher, their lived experiences of PE assessment were described. Lived-body experiences were thematized by resting on their laurels, cloned body which elaborates on that they practised their PE assessment with familiarity and convenience and copied their teachers practices in the past without self reflection. Lived-space experiences were thematized by space shifting in the air, a field of convergence, not divergence. The space that they, as primary teacher, engaged in PE assessment is atmosphere-changing field because students got so nervous that their bodily energy was focused on one spot. Lived-time experiences were thematized by like water and oil, time of growth. Although they prepare for PE assessment so hard, their students reaction to it was not as satisfying as they expected and also unexpected consequences of it let them participate in self-reflection to become better teachers. Lived-relations experiences were thematized by orientations for and toward students. groping in the dark. Participants oriented for and toward students in PE assessment practice and they looked for whats good in PE assessment gropingly by accumulating experiences of assessment practices.
Result 3, the meaning of assessing PE in primary school was interpreted and divided into three parts. Rich and vivid descriptions already made in result 1 & 2 were interpreted and newly understood through the researchers interpretative lens. First, PE assessment centred on the educational subjects. In participants lived experiences of PE assessment, the teacher existed as a subject of teaching, and the student existed as a subject of moving body and an active PE learner. But, through their lived experiences, there were practices that could not be explained and revealed by theories, common sense, policy documents. But, the daily terms, Education and Teacher, which have been commonly used in a static sense impede the expansion of practical meanings generated from educational practice contexts. Therefore, we are asked for replacing them with Pedagogy and Pedagogue, which can provide practical and authentic understandings of PE assessment practices. In addition, student should be elevated as a subject of moving body that actively interacts with the world(Mereau-Ponty, 1945) and an active PE learner.
Second, PE assessment oriented to students growth. With a closer look at primary teachers lived experience, students were thrown in de-contextualized motor skills assessment, fragmented sport skills assessment, and fitness tests in PE contexts. This could regard students body as objectification, instrumentalism of PE assessment, which is gotten worse when standards and normativity add up to it(Ingerslev, 2013; Slatman, 2014). Movement literacy(ML) is emerging terminology to keep students bodily subjectivity from being objectified and instrumentalised. It consists of moving with a poise and perceptively and to be perceptive in reading and writing the environment leading students to interpret and assess their movements themselves. ML can give insights and make up to current PE assessment which is practised in de-contextualised and bodily objectified ways. By self-reflecting students movement, not the standards, It can make students participate actively in exploratory learning environment and ultimately immerse in PE assessment. In addition, primary education is the stage of romance(Whitehead, 1929), and Choi(2005) defines primary PE as a romance PE in which the romance of physical education begins. Primary PE should play a important role in providing students with infinite possibilities of life and physical growth through waiting, rather than selections, ranks.
Third, PE assessment oriented to teachers growth. In participants lived experiences of PE assessment, unintended and unexpected consequences of PE assessment exposed. Pedagogy is good in itself, but its consequences could lead to unintended and unexpected results(Hay & Tinning & Engstrom, 2015). Participants tried to find out what was righteous actions by asking themselves and retracing their assessment practices. This pedagogical reflection is a driving force for better primary PE teacher and improve their assessment practice. In addition, participants experienced unexpected moments triggered by impromptu situations in their PE assessment practices. Each time, participants respond instantly to them with context-specific, know-how embodied reactions never written in the book, theory, policy. This is so called a pedagogical tact, which refers to the wisdom of knowing what to do in an educational situation and making an righteous judgment instantly(van Manen, 1991). Pedagogical tact comes from thoughtfulness for and toward students. Thus, in PE assessment contexts, it can be expected that teacher performs pedagogical tacts with thoughtfulness and develop it through accumulations of their experiences.
