2018 평창 동계올림픽 신문보도 내용분석

Abstract

본 연구는 2018년 평창 동계올림픽 기간 중 신문에 나타난 선수와 관련된 보도에서 여성선수와 남성선수의 보도에 양/질적으로 차이가 있는지를 밝혀 올림픽의 본질에 맞는 미디어의 방향을 고찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 올림픽 헌장(IOC, 2017)에 따르면, 올림픽은 평등과 자유를 위한 범세계적 문화 축제이며, 어떠한 차별도 없는 공정한 경쟁을 통해 사회적으로 건강한 가치를 끌어내는 이벤트여야 한다. 하지만 미디어에서 는 올림픽을 외모지상주의, 선정주의, 영웅주의 등과 같은 각종 드라마틱한 요소를 부각하여 올림픽 정신을 함께 고찰해야 할 대중들에게 오락성만을 부각해 보도하는 왜곡된 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이 사실이다. 이러한 편협한 보도경향을 개선하기 위해 본 연구에서는 현재 우리 사회에서 이슈가 되고 있는 올림픽 속 성별에 따른 차별을 주제로, 2018 평창 동계올림픽 기간 동안 국내의 진보와 보수를 대표하는 종합일간지인 경향신문 , 한겨레 (이상 진보) 및 조선일보 , 중앙일보 , 동아일보 (이상 보수)의 남녀선수 관련 글기사를 분석대상으로 다음과 같은 연구문제를 밝히고자 수행되었다. 첫째, 성별에 따른 기사의 빈도수를 비교하였고, 둘째, 성별에 따라 적용된 프레임의 차이를 살펴보았고 (기술중심 혹은 비기술중심), 셋째, 여성선수 관련 기사가 대부분 여성적 종목만을 중점적으로 다루어, 현대사회에 만연한 성역할 고정관념을 강화하는 새로운 형태의 차별로써 사용되고 있는지를 밝히고자 하였으며, 마지막으로 진보신문과 보수신문 간에 여성선수를 주제로 한 보도량에 차이가 있는지를 밝혀 정치적 의제가 성역할 고정관념에 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고자 했다.

This study conducted a content analysis of 5 selected Liberal and Conservative newspapers in Korea to compare how they covered female and male athletes during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. All the articles depicting athletes performance during the PyeongChang Olympics were analyzed for both qualitative and quantitative research. Findings in the qualitative analysis are as followed: even though female athletes are increasingly portrayed as serious athletes in recent newspapers with more focus on the athletic abilities, female athletes were persistently portrayed focused on non-sports related aspects such as personal lives, appearances, and attractiveness. Also, Quantitative analysis indicated that female and male athletes competing in the PyeongChang Olympics received an equitable amount of coverage, and the political bias of the newspapers has no significant effect on gendered media coverage. Reasons for the equitable amount of newspaper coverage of female athletes can be explained by provisional nationalism over the traditional gendered frames. Theoretical and practical implications are outlined with suggestions for future research.
