Abstract
This paper is a comparative analysis of female characters represented in the 17th-18th century Korean jeongi novel(傳奇小說) Unyeongjeon (운영전, 雲英傳) and Vietnam jeongi novel Ungalshinnyeojeon (운갈신녀전, 雲葛神女傳). The paper focuses on analyzing the feminist perspective depicted in these novels through womens consciousness and desires by identifying the similarities and differences of how these female characters create their identities.
Unyeongjeon is an early 17th-century novel, widely regarded as a masterpiece of Korean classical literature. Jeongishinbo (전기신보), on the other hand, is an exemplary 18th-century Vietnam anthology. Jeongishinbo is a collection of 6 literary works, where first 3 are written by an outstanding Vietnamese female writer Doan Thi Diem(단씨점, 段氏點). Among them is the novel Ungalshinnyeojeon that, unlike other jeongi novels of that time, depicts a clear process of female identity creation and life improvement in a way similar to Unyeongjeon.
Unyeongjeon and Ungalshinnyeojeon are both classified as classical novels and both were written during the latter years of classical novel development period in Korea and Vietnam. These novels are similar due to the fact that they were both written in the similar historical, social and ideological conditions. Furthermore, these novels are both similar in the way they place female characters in the center of narrative and focus on addressing their problems, very much unlike other classical novels of that period.
This paper is a comparative analysis of East Asian jeongi novels aesthetics from the perspective of equality. From this perspective, both novels focus on analyzing the identities of female characters in Unyeongjeon and Ungalshinnyeojeon as equal identities instead of comparing and contrasting them against each other.
The third chapter focuses on studying the female characters identities by defining the motivation behind their identities creation, the creation processes and the end results. Un-yeong and Gang-seon were both born as Taoist hermits and both were motivated to improve their lives and form their identities due to the loneliness of the reality they were living in and their internal emptiness.
Both characters created their identities while actively pursuing love. They also contributed to their identities formation through interaction and creation of relationships with other characters in their worlds. In case of Unyeongjeon, the female protagonist rebuilt broken relationships with others around her and confronted the patriarchal social order by forming strong relationships and affectionate ties with her fellow court ladies living in the palace. In case of Ungalshinnyeojeon, the female protagonist clearly identified her presence and actively displayed her abilities by forming direct relationships with outsiders by stepping outside the fence around her house. As Unyeong worked toward improving her life through social interactions at the place where she lived, Gang-seon worked toward establishing her identity by escaping the place where she lived and displaying her talents in a new place.
Both characters met the same fate – death. By dying, Un-yeong achieved her ultimate goal of winning affection and escaping the restraints of Grand Prince An-pyeong patriarchal ideology. Both Un-yeong and Gang-seon returned to their original statuses after death. However, as Un-yeong returned to her previous heavenly life, Gang-seon becomed a goddess. Gang-seon becoming a goddess is characteristic of Vietnamese classical novels and was influenced by the Vietnamese folk tales that focused on the idea of goddess worship. Furthermore, both heroines pursued completely different lives. As Un-yeong focused more on the matters of love and heart, Gang-seon strove for independence above all.
Based on the results of the above research, the fourth chapter examines the feminist point of view of the Unyeongjeon and Ungalshinnyeojeons writers. Both writers focused on exploring the lives of their female protagonists in various ways. They both expressed the desires of their female characters through a positive narrative and addressed the issue of female identity in the traditional society.
