Abstract
Humans have the ability to flexibly handle a variety of tasks in daily life, such as walking on the phone or drinking coffee while driving. Therefore, one of the main goals in current robotics research is to give various robots human-like capabilities. In fact, this is also one of the essential prerequisites for future robots to play in dynamic and unpredictable situations such as dangerous disaster rescue scenarios and social service. Since robots with high Degree of Freedom (DoF) such as mobile manipulators and humanoids have been gaining more and more attention over the last few decades, handling multiple high-priority control targets at the same time is especially important in robotic systems. However, although extensive researches for controlling multiple objectives, there is no general control method in order to handle a flexible priority, such as dynamically inserting new high-level tasks to a robot that performs a given task. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to propose a optimal controller that performs multiple tasks with priorities simultaneously, rearranges those priorities smoothly, and enables robots to efficiently ensure stable execution of various robots.

More specifically, a continuous task transition method by using Hierarchical Quadratic Programming (HQP) based controller to insert, remove, and rearrange arbitrary tasks without discontinuity of control inputs is proposed in the thesis. Although General HQP based controller can effectively calculate optimal solutions for strictly prioritized tasks, the continuity of the control inputs is not guaranteed if the priorities of the tasks are dynamically changed while the robot is operating. However, the proposed control scheme with activation parameters ensures smooth task transition because this parameter can interpolate feasible solution area between new and existing tasks without modifying the control structure. The proposed approach is applied to various task transition scenarios including joint limit, singularity, and obstacle avoidance to guarantee stable execution of the robot. The proposed control scheme has been implemented on a 7-DoF robotic arm, and its performance is demonstrated by the continuity of control input during various task transition scenarios.

Then, the proposed continuous task transition method have been extended to a social robot with a non-holonomic mobile manipulator and a tele-operation system with a robot hand in order to increase capabilities of these robots. First, a whole-body controller of the non-holonomic mobile manipulator is developed for achieving complex task effectively in various fields including service and industrial robotics. Because the proposed controller is designed based on HQP, the controller can deal with both equality and inequality tasks. Moreover, by applying the continuous task transition strategy, our controller can compute the continuous control input when the priorities of the tasks are changed. The proposed control frameworks with the non-holonomic mobile manipulator have been validated by various experiments with both robotic simulator and real system.

Second, a tele-operation system with the robot hand is developed with the concept of the postural synergy and the continuous task transition method. This tele-operation frameworks mainly consists of three parts: Postural synergy extractor, grasping force estimator, and the synergy-level controller. As a postural synergy extractor, we use a tensor algebra to represent a multi-factor model relevant to different individuals and motions in multiple dimension. Therefore, the synergies extracted by the proposed algorithm can account for not only various grasping motions but also the different characteristics of different people. On the other hand, the grasping force estimator can estimate the grasping forces of the operator by using surface Electromyograph (sEMG) signals. Similar to the postural synergy extractor, the estimator uses a multi-factor model in the tensor space in order to represent not only a relationship between grasping force and sEMG signals but also grasping force and various arm postures. Finally, the synergy-level controller is developed by using the system modeling with the postural synergies of the robot hand and the continuous task transition method. The proposed controller can not only imitate the motion of the operator but also perform in-hand manipulation to grasp an object firmly.

As a result, this dissertation presents a controller that can effectively interact with the unpredictable dynamic environment of various existing and future robots that will have more capabilities.
