정조대 奎章閣 閱古館 장서의 조성

Abstract

Kyujanggak(奎章閣) Yeolgogwan(閱古觀) was a library that housed books from China collected by King Jeongjo. Article from Jeongjo Sillok shows the creation of the Yeolgogwan collection. However, since it recorded the long term event in such a contracted way, it does not fully deliver the whole process. This paper examines the construction process of the Yeolgogwan collection based on chronicle materials such as Naegagillyeok(內閣日曆), Seungjeongwonilgi(承政院日記), and Ilseongnok(日省錄). It also examines the influx route of the books through collection seals imprinted on the Chinese books stored in Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. Noticeable aspect is that large portion of the Yeolgogwan collection consisted of books from Old Hongmungwan(舊弘文館) and Gangdo library(江都內府藏書), and individual collections purchased within the country. Yeolgogwan collection was created first by collecting domestic books and then supplementing the shortage by importation. This aspect is important in order to understand the issue related to Yeolgogwan collection.
