The culture naturally moves as people come and go all the time. During the Joseon Dynasty, exchanges with foreign countries were restricted, so it was all the more meaningful to see the culture of other countries. During the Joseon Dynasty, the only people who could officially travel to and from China were the envoy.
Since envoy during the Joseon Dynasty was the only chance to actually see and feel Ming China, it is necessary to take a broad look at the meaning of the envoy from the diplomatic perspective to the cultural perspective.
This study took note of the Beijing tourism of the envoys of Joseon, moving away from the inertia of the existing study of envoy"s.
When foreign envoys arrive in Beijing, they are not allowed to leave the Hoidongkwan(會同館) without notice except for an official schedule. By the way, the Ming Dynasty only officially allowed Joseon envoys to tour. In Beijing, where foreign movements were not free, it was very symbolic for envoys to tour.
This study analyzed the process of officialization of tours to Beijing by Joseon envoys. And the study identified the personality of diplomatic relations between Joseon and Ming in East Asia from a tourism perspective.
