- Abstract
- This paper investigates the authority of holy man Jerome which is distinct from but as precarious as that of Manfred. Although Manfred seems to wield uncontrollable power in Castle of Otranto, it is Jerome who can guarantee him the legitimate heir. He is the voice that decides what is lawful and what is not. With his right to approve of valid marriage or divorce, and to define family relationships, Jerome precludes Manfred from marrying Isabella. While the castle belongs to Manfred, language belongs to Jerome; he is in charge of laws, names, and explanations. The significance of historical recordings- even the interpretation of The Castle of Otranto itself -depends on the friar. However, the authority of Jerome shows rupture throughout the text. His explanation is rejected and interrupted by various characters, especially by Theodore, and halts in the end. The spots and cracks in the text where Jeromes language does not operate throw doubt on the version of authentic writing which Jerome warrants and restores.
