Flexible risers have been widely utilized for the transfer of oil and gas products from the well to production units. The components of flexible risers, unlike steel risers, experience complex contact phenomena during the operation. The contact between helical wires of tensile armor layers and adjacent layers especially results in a significant bending nonlinearity, making it hard to estimate the structural responses. The use of finite element analysis (FEA) method to perform the local analysis of flexible risers has been tried but it still has a limitation in expanding it to realistic irregular motions. Hence, the dynamic analysis using analytical models is more likely to be employed because it can directly trace the stress time history inside the cross-section.
The use of analytical models is associated with the theoretical derivation of internal stress and cross-sectional resultants. In most cases, however, the interaction between helical wires and sheath layers is expressed with significant simplifications, which leads to a considerable error in the evaluation of structural responses of flexible risers. Another important issue in the assessment of flexible risers is the reproduction of nonlinear bending responses when carrying out the global dynamic analysis. In general, most researchers assumed that the axisymmetric loads such as tension and pressure are constant regardless of the motion. The above assumption is reasonable from the perspective of the fact that internal and external pressure not much varies depending on the time.
The recent application of flexible risers, however, is shifting towards to allow a relatively large offset of floating platforms for cost reduction in mooring systems. That is, some critical regions of flexible riser systems can experience a severe variation of tension due to the motion of platforms. This indicates that the contact pressure on the surface of helical wires is no longer constant, and may change depending on time.
This study aims at suggesting a new dynamic analysis method for flexible risers which can reflect the realistic and detailed interaction between layers. The analytical model presented in this study involves both the friction continuity and shear deformation of internal layers, by which the accuracy problem of conventional analytical models can be improved.
Considering the time-varying contact pressure, this study proposes a stiffness update method. The stiffness update method takes a continuous variation of contact pressure and incorporates this into the global dynamic analysis. Therefore, the realistic axis-symmetric loads are involved in the global dynamic analysis.
Based on the proposed methods, some comparative studies are performed herein. It is manifested that the shear deformation of internal layers gives a significant reduction in stress range by postponing the slip of helical wires and that the varying tension resulted from the motion of flexible riser systems can lead to additional fatigue damage.
