역설적 상황 속 다중수행의 의미화

Abstract

본 연구는 일상에서 수행되는 다양한 역할들 사이에서 발생하는 겹침과 분열의 모순적 현장들을 분석하고, 여러 역할로 중첩된 나를 미술의 방법을 통한 일상적 행위로 체현하는 작품들을 자기 체현과 일상의 재조직이라는 관점에서 탐구한다. 유한한 개인이 일상에서 다양한 역할들을 수행하는 과정은 필연적으로 원활하지 못한 상황들을 만들어내고 모순된 순간들을 동반한다. 나는 이러한 순간들 사이에서 역설적 상황을 포착함으로써 이분법적 사고를 넘어서는 다중적인 입장 및 수행 가능성을 발견하고, 자기 체현을 시도하는 작품을 통해 이를 나의 실제적 삶에 대입하여 기존의 일상에서 미래지향적인 변화를 끌어낼 미술의 가능성을 찾고자 했다. 중첩된 수행과 다중적 입장에 대한 관심은 내가 일상에서 상반된 입장의 역할을 동시에 수행하고 있음을 인지하면서 출발하였다. 나의 역할은 매 순간, 장소마다 바뀌고 중첩되며, 여러 겹으로 얽히는 역할과 입장은 나를 이러지도 저러지도 못하는 상황으로 자주 몰고 갔다. 이러한 판단보류와 확신할 수 없는 상태는 나에게 오히려 다중적 역할수행을 성찰하는 기회가 되었고, 역설적 상황을 작업 방식으로 활용하면서 다중적 수행을 의미화하는 작품을 수행할 수 있도록 하였다. 나의 작품에서 동시적 수행-대립, 의도된 실패-반복, 느슨한 위장-교란을 활용하여 만들어진 모순된 순간들은 이를 보는 관객들의 판단을 계속 미끄러지게 한다. 대립적이라 여기는 행위를 동시에 수행하는 것은 이것 아니면 저것과 같은 양자택일적 관계를 벗어나 이것이면서 저것일 수 있는 복합적 상태를 제시하고, 복합적 상태가 야기할 다양한 가능성을 가져온다. 반복적 수행을 통해 알 듯 모를 듯한 행동을 취하는 것은 뚜렷한 결과물을 통해 목적을 이뤄내거나 지시성이 강한 텍스트를 통해 작업에 대한 강요를 띠지 않고, 특정한 명령에 딱히 저항하지 않으면서도 개인 내부로부터 변환을 모색하는 것을 가능함을 제시하는 방식이다. ~인척하는 행동은 유보적인 태도일 수 있지만, 어느 하나를 단정적으로 선택할 수 없게 혼란을 만들면서 교란의 현상이 일어나고 있음에 대해서는 확실히 주목할 수 있게 하는 방법이다. 이는 개인에게 부여된 역할들이 결코 고립된 것이 아니며, 동시에 그 역할들이 명확하게 단정되거나 고정되어 불변하는 것이 아니라 계속해서 전환되는 변화의 상태로 제시하고자 함이다. <노력이 지워질 때>에서 나는 대립하는 행위를 동시에 수행한다. 동시적 수행이 만들어내는 모호한 상태는 뜻하지 않은 양면적 상황을 노출하여 판단을 미끄러지게 만드는 동시적 수행의 전략이다. <캠퍼스에서 골프 치기>는 교내에서 사카린 공을 반복 스윙하는데, 이는 무언가를 열심히 시도하고 있지만, 실질적으로는 아무것도 하지 못하는 의도된 실패로, 아무것도 아닌 순간에서야만 실체를 드러내는 것과 같은 이중성을 통해 현실에 우회적으로 개입한다. <#gallerytourproject>는 작가이면서 관객인 중첩된 나의 역할을 그대로 활용하여, 양쪽의 역할 간의 경계를 허물고 작업을 담당하는 작가와 일반 관객으로서의 입장을 서로 위장한다. 관람자로서의 나와 작가로서의 내가 하나의 사진 이미지 안에서 상반된 역할을 수행하는 것은 동시 공존하는 개인과 개인들 간의 역할교차를 유희적으로 보여준다. <흘리기_울면 안 돼>에서는 한국 사회에서의 가부장제 현상에 대한 비판 또는 순응이라는 이분법적인 사고에서 벗어나, 남성으로서 여러 겹으로 중첩된 나의 입장들을 대변하고자 하였다. 나의 사적 경험을 토대로 이루어지는 퍼포먼스 작업은 자기 반영적 성격을 지님과 동시에 자기 반성적 수행의 성격도 드러내는 것으로 일종의 시차적 반응들이다. 이분화된 체계가 깊이 자리 잡아 다양성이 활발히 허용되지 않고 있는 한국 사회에서 실재화된 삶의 경험을 작업을 통해 지속해서 발견하고 개입하는 것은 나의 미술이 다양성을 확보하기 위한 미술실천이 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 나는 다양한 중첩들이 발생하는 행위와 일상, 현실을 미술의 방식으로 체현함으로써 역설적 상황을 실천하고, 이를 통해 나의 일상을 재구성할 미술의 가능성에 주목한다.

The following study analyzes ironic sites of overlaps and divisions among various roles that are assumed on a daily basis and explores self as an instance of such sites from an arts-perspective concerning self-manifestation and rearranging the ordinary. A finite individual inevitably faces contradictions and conflicts in the course of undertaking various roles on a daily basis. This study incorporates a work of self-manifestation into real life, and therefore seeks the capacity of art to induce future-oriented changes by focusing on ironies and the possibilities of undertaking and performing multiple roles that overcome a set of prescribed binaries. I first became interested in performance of multiple roles as I realized how I was performing multiple roles that contradicted each other. My changing roles overlapped every instance and every place, resulting in a multifarious positionality that put me on the spot. In uncertainty and deference, I came to critically reflect on such circumstances, which enabled me to incorporate them into my own practice of signifying performance of multiple roles. The ironies created in terms of simultaneous performance and conflict, intentional failure and repetition, loose disguise and deception in my work constantly elide the viewers sense of judgment. Performing multiple roles that contradict one another suggests a complex set of circumstances that requires overcoming binaries, and along with them various possibilities that may arise from performing such roles. Repetition of acts to a point of ambiguity is a method that seeks ones inner possibilities while avoiding purposiveness, outright resistance, or imposing a clear set of directives. Although such acts may be provisional, it certainly brings to light the situation in which confusion takes place by making unavailable the idea of definite choice. Such a method suggests that the roles ascribed to individuals are not isolated, and at the same time are not fixed or unchanging. Rather, they change, and are constantly in transit. When Try Gets Erased is a work of performing multiple roles that contradict each other. The ambiguity created by such performance elides judgment by strategically exposing double-sidedness. Round on Campus with Saccharin Ball features repetitive swinging of a ball made out of saccharin, which is a form of intended failure where something is ceaselessly tried with no avail. The work tries to intervene indirectly in reality through an irony that the true substance is revealed only when nothing substantial is going on. #gallerytourproject utilizes the role of artist, which isnt clearly distinguished from that of a viewer, to take down boundaries between the two, where the artist pretends to be both the artist and the viewer. The work is a playful testimony to the role-switching among people as the artist performs the role of artist and the role of viewer—two roles that contradict one another—in a single image. Dripping- Youd Better Not Cry seeks to overcome the binary of defiance or submission to patriarchy in South Korea and represent multifarious and subtle aspects of masculinity. These performances that are based on personal experiences are self-reflective and at the same time self-representative, which accompany a type of asynchronous response. In South Korea, where forms of binary thought are deeply in place and not much diversity is being tolerated, these works seek to secure diversity by discovering and intervening in life experiences. By materializing them—where various forms of overlap occur—in the form of art, I attempt to emphasize the potential of art for reconfiguring the ordinary and performing the irony.
