통계포스터에 나타난 통계적 탐구질문 분석

Abstract

실생활의 통계정보를 해석하고 비판적으로 이해하기 위해 통계적 탐구의 절차를 중심으로 한 통계교육이 강조되고 있다. 특히 통계적 탐구의 초기 단계인 문제 설정의 단계의 중요성이 더욱 더 강조되고 있는데, 이때 탐구의 과정에서 어떤 탐구질문이 제시되고 이 질문이 구체화되며 개선되어 나가는지가 성공적인 통계적 탐구를 결정한다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 좋은 통계적 탐구질문의 특성을 문헌조사를 통해 정리하고, 통계포스터 자료에 나타난 탐구질문을 이러한 특성에 따라 분석함으로써, 어떻게 탐구질문의 설정 과정을 지도하여 통계적 탐구 활동을 안내할 수 있을지 알아보고자 하였다. 문헌조사를 토대로 탐구질문의 구체화 정도에 따라 주제질문, 구체화질문, 분석질문으로 분류하였고, 좋은 탐구질문의 조건을 바탕으로 도출한 특성인 변수의 명확성, 모집단의 명확성, 의도의 명확성, 자료 수집의 적절성, 맥락의 유형, 변이성 예상의 6가지 특성이 어떤 수준과 양상으로 나타나는지 분석하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 통계포스터에 나타난 탐구질문의 특성이 통계질문의 구성과 전체적인 양상에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보았다. 덧붙여, 탐구 과정이 상세히 나타난 포스터를 분석하여 학생들의 통계적 탐구과정에서 어떤 시점에 어떤 유형의 탐구질문을 제시하며, 이를 수정하고 발전시키는지 살펴보았다. 통계포스터경진대회에 출품한 39개의 통계포스터에 나타난 탐구질문을 분석한 결과 탐구질문이 구체화될수록 변수의 명확성이나 모집단의 명확성, 의도의 명확성 등의 탐구질문의 특성의 수준이 높아짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한 덜 구체화된 질문의 특성 수준이 높을수록 통계적 탐구 전체의 질문의 구성이 양적, 질적으로 풍부해지고 따라서 탐구에서 분석하는 가설의 종류와 구성이 복잡해지는 양상을 발견할 수 있었다. 주제질문과 구체화질문의 변수의 명확성의 수준이 높을수록 탐구질문이 파생해 나가는 경로가 더 길게 진행되었다. 주제질문과 구체화질문의 의도의 명확성의 수준이 높을수록 분석질문의 수가 늘어났다. 또한 탐구질문의 의도가 요약의 성격을 가진 경우보다 비교, 관계분석의 성격을 가진 경우에 탐구질문의 구성의 복잡도가 높아졌다. 그리고 개인적 맥락의 탐구에서 독립변수를 고려하는 경우가 더 많이 나타났다. 이로부터, 통계적 탐구를 지도할 때 탐구질문을 충분히 구체화하도록 지도하며, 이때 변수의 명확성, 모집단의 명확성 등을 더욱 확보하고 의도를 명확히 표현하되 요약질문 뿐 아니라 비교 및 관계성 질문을 유도할수록 좋은 탐구가 이루어질 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 개인에게 흥미가 있는 주제를 탐구할수록 학생들이 더욱 많은 변수를 제시하여 탐구를 풍부하게 진행한다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 또한 탐구 과정에서 학생들은 사전조사, 부분조사 등을 수행한 이후에 탐구질문을 변경, 수정하거나 방향을 바꾸는 경우를 보였는데, 이는 통계적 탐구과정에서 탐구질문이 초반에만 설정되는 것이 아니라 분석과 해석의 과정을 거치면서 변경, 수정되고 새로운 탐구질문을 파생함을 보여주는 것이다. 이로부터 통계적 탐구를 지도할 때 사전 조사 및 초기 분석 이후에 질문을 수정, 개선할 수 있는 절차를 도입하거나 유도함으로써 좋은 탐구질문을 만들고 탐구를 개선하게 할 수 있다는 점과 학생들의 분석 결과가 예상과 다르거나 유의미하지 않은 경우 질문의 수정과 개선을 통해 탐구를 개선하도록 지도할 수 있다는 점을 알 수 있었다.

Statistical educators have emphasized on teaching how to conduct statistical investigation in order to interpret various statistical information encoutered in everyday life. In particular, formulating the questions, which is the initial stage of statistical investigation, is the first and most important part for successful statistical investigation. In this study, the characteristics of good statistical investigative questions are summarized through literature reviews, and the investigative questions in statistical poster data are analyzed according to these characteristics to find out how to guide the setting of investigative questions and statistical inquiry activities. 39 statistical posters data from a competition among middle school students are analyzed. Various problem statements which are presented as "questions", "goals", "overviews", "hypothesis", "analysis", "conclusions" in the poster are extracted to form the analysis data. Problem statements are divided into "theme questions", "sophisticated questions", "analysis questions" according to the level of detailing. Also each problem is assigned to a level or a category in terms of 6 criteria for good investigative questions. From the analysis of the level of questions and the complexity of the overall structure of problem statements in each poster, the author could find the level of properties for good investigative questions of less structured problem statement affects the complexity of the overall structure of problem statements. Also modification and improvement of questions occur after pilot investigation or partial investigation, which indicates guiding students to conduct small scale analysis can help improve the quality of questions and statistical investigation.
