This thesis is about childrens life-writings which mainly appeared in the 1980s when the literary field sought for the participation of various subjects. I focus on how a child as a subject of writing has been represented in the discourse of the 1980s and what was the political power of themselves exceeding the discourse. There have been many studies until recently trying to deconstruct the male-laborer-centered image of the minjung(the people), which is a keyword of the 1980s, but few have questioned its adult-centered image and paid attention to children and young adult. By re-examining the genre of childrens life-writings located in the minjungs writing and the discourse surrounding it, I attempt to see the particular role of children among minjung. However, the purpose of this thesis is not just to retrieve the childrens life-writings to the history of writings of the minjung or the labor, it is rather to confirm the creativity and playful aspects of childrens life-writings that cannot be explained in the normative frame of realism or labor literature.
I do this by examining how children acquire agency through writing, against the history of the development of modern education and literature, in Chapter 2. Childrens writings were divided into literary writings and life-writings. The former referred to the childrens writing produced via literary contests. This was its own system of literary production and lay the foundation of childrens literature in the early stages. Life-writings, on the other hand, was composed of general writings such as diaries and letters, and these were heavily influenced by the education and communications system. The division between these two genres of writing was solidified in the 1960s when teachers in elementary schools proposed life-writings as its own literary genre. This was also the time when the publication of childrens life-writings such as The Diary of Anne Frank or Jeo Haneuredo Seulpeumi became popular.
Chapter 3 explores the discourse on childrens life-writings by focusing on the critical work of Lee Odeok, a teacher and a critic, who played a pivotal figure in furthering the life-writings. In the late 1970s, writings of factory workers, farmers, and the impoverished, those who had thus far been excluded from the literary framework as an author, started gaining footing and led a reformation of the literary field. Childrens writings and pedagogy were not immune to these changes, and educators and publishers were drawn to this genre.
Lee Odeok considered childrens life-writings as the honest creation of truthful living. This truthful living formed the ethos of pedagogy and was also the aesthetical foundation of realism. However, it is ironic that this ethos manufactured the representation of a good child that childrens life-writings tried to criticize. The imagination and distortion, self-testimony witnessed in childrens life-writings reveal not literal truth but performative veracity in life-writings. Also, I argue that Lee Odeuks concept of working children was less of a performative creator of life-writings and closer to the object created by Minjung literature. I rather focus on the act of the children reconstructing the world by writing about themselves, and not on the ideological discourse of their environment.
Chapter 4 examines how children discovered their alterity in the world and used it to form connections with other beings. A child encountered various relations from producing a piece of writing, to eventually getting a class collection published. The teacher played a central role in their experience, and with reference to Freires Pedagogy, life-writings education in the 1980s established the role of a teacher as a liberator of the oppressed. When a teacher teaches writing to a student, it is to make the child realize their own inherent ability to learn something. To accomplish this, a teacher is required to tell the student that their noise can be a word by listening to them before going into conversation. The confidence that this gives a child, allows them to form their own values and perspectives to accept the creativity of the others they encounter. The imagination activated while playing and the openness learned from the community is the foundation of many affects. Childrens life-writings related to other kinds of art forms, stretching across space and time, and the culture of life-writings constructed an emotional community expanding to other generations and time.
