니체의 『도덕의 계보학』에 나타난 고통 개념 연구

Abstract

이 글은 프리드리히 니체의 후기 저작인 『도덕의 계보학』(이하 『계보학』)을 중심으로, 고통을 대하는 태도가 개인과 사회를 판별하는 기준이 될 수 있다는 그의 주장을 살펴본다. 고통을 대하는 인간의 태도는 두 가지로 나뉠 수 있으며, 어떤 태도를 취하느냐에 따라 개인의 위계가 구분된다는 니체의 주장은 그의 여러 저작에서 초기부터 후기까지 일관되게 나타난다. 니체는 이를 궁핍하게 고통을 겪는가 혹은 충만하게 고통을 겪는가로 구분할 수 있다고 보았으며, 고통을 대하는 태도를 결정하는 것은 한 문화나 개인이 고통을 어떻게 해석하는가의 문제와 연관된다고 주장한다. 그래서 각 문화와 그 문화 속의 개인이 서로 다른 고통 해석으로 인하여 어떤 태도를 보이는지를 판별하는 구절들이 그의 저작에는 산재해있다. 이 글은 그와 같은 관심이 『계보학』에 전제되어 있기에, 고통을 중심으로 살펴볼 때 니체 철학의 전체 기획을 이해할 수 있는 포괄적인 설명이 도출된다고 주장한다. 『계보학』에서 니체는 서구의 기독교 도덕 및 형이상학 철학을 전면적으로 비판하며, 사회와 개인이 가진 고유한 힘에의 의지가 소진되도록 이끄는 사고방식으로 금욕적 이상을 지목한다. 금욕적 이상은 기독교 도덕과 형이상학 철학 특유의 사고방식과 가정을 아울러 가리키기 위해 니체가 『계보학』에서 한정적으로 사용하는 개념어이다. 금욕적 이상은 금욕을 자기 목표를 성취하기 위한 수단으로 삼는 것을 넘어서서, 금욕 자체를 이상화한다. 니체가 이를 비판하는 이유를 이 글은 고통과 그에 대한 해석의 관점에서 찾는다. 이 글은 금욕적 이상이 일종의 고통 해석이기도 하다는 점에 착안하여, 니체가 금욕적 이상을 비판하는 이유를 고통에서 찾는다. 다시 말해 금욕적 이상은 고통에 대한 궁핍한 태도를 이끌어 내는 원인이자, 극복되어야 할 고통 해석으로 규정한다. 그리고 『계보학』 내의 여러 유형이 금욕적 이상에 의존하여 고통에 관계 맺는 방식을 살펴봄으로써, 니체 철학 안에서 금욕적 이상을 극복할 수 있는 구체적 방안은 어떻게 구성될 수 있을지를 검토한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 우선 니체 저작에 등장하는 고통을 분류하여 유형화를 시도한다. 니체 저작 속에서 주되게 논의되는 고통은 다섯 가지 유형으로 구분할 수 있다. 이렇게 분류한 다섯 가지 유형의 고통을 기준으로, 고통과 그에 대한 해석이 『계보학』의 역사적 맥락에서 어떻게 논의되는지를 검토한다. 각각의 개별적인 고통은 해석을 거쳐서 전환되거나 증대되거나 감소할 수 있으며, 이러한 해석은 또 다른 고통의 원인이 되기도 한다. 금욕적 이상을 비판하는 니체의 논의를 통해서 대안적인 고통 해석은 어떻게 도출될 수 있는지를 탐색할 때, 니체가 『계보학』에서 수행하는 도덕 비판의 의미와 니체 철학의 기획이 드러날 수 있다.

This study focused on one of Friedrich Nietzsches later works, On the Genealogy of Morals, to examine his argument that the attitude towards suffering could serve as a standard to judge an individual and society. Nietzsche argues that there are two human attitudes towards suffering and that the hierarchies of individuals differ by which attitude one displays could be continuously found in many of his early works and later works. Nietzsche categorized that one could suffer from impoverishment or could suffer from superabundance and stressed that the attitude towards suffering is determined by how one culture or individual interprets suffering. His works have numerous phrases that determine what attitudes each culture and the individual within the culture show due to different interpretations of suffering. This study argues that because such interest is presupposed in On the Genealogy of Morals, placing suffering at the center of the discussion could result in a comprehensive explanation of the entire design of Nietzsches philosophy. In On the Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche criticizes the Western Christian morality and metaphysical philosophy in full measure, and points to the ascetic ideal as a way of thinking that leads to the exhaustion of the Will to Power, which is unique to the society and individuals. Ascetic ideal is a conceptual word Nietzsche uses only in On the Genealogy of Morals to refer to the way of thinking and assumptions characteristic of the Christian morality and metaphysical philosophy. The ascetic ideal does not end at using asceticism as a means to accomplish ones goal but idealizes asceticism itself. This paper posits that Nietzsche was critical towards such an approach due to his understanding and interpretation of suffering. Drawing from the fact that the ascetic ideal is also a type of interpretation of suffering, this paper finds the basis of Nietzsches criticism towards the ascetic ideal from suffering. In other words, the ascetic ideal could be defined as the cause of the impoverished attitude towards suffering and an interpretation of suffering that one should overcome. Also, by examining how the various types in On the Genealogy of Morals rely on the ascetic ideal to relate to suffering, this thesis studied how specific ways to overcome the ascetic ideal could be constructed within Nietzsches philosophical ideas. For this, this thesis first attempts a categorization by classifying the types of suffering that appear in Nietzsches works. Five types of suffering mainly appear in Nietzsches works. Based on the five types of suffering, this thesis examines how suffering and its interpretation have been discussed in the historical context of the book On the Genealogy of Morals. Each suffering can be converted, intensified, or reduced through interpretation, and such interpretation could also become a cause of another suffering. Only when we examine ways to present alternative interpretations to suffering through Nietzsches criticism of the ascetic ideal could we understand the significance of Nietzsches critique of morality in On the Genealogy of Morals and the design of his philosophical ideas.
