Abstract
Strict emissions regulations and a focus on the reduction of greenhouse gases have driven the need for increasing efficiency of internal combustion engines. Also alternative energy sources have been investigated in the engines due to rising crude oil cost. So, dual fuel combustion which has high efficiency and can use alternative fuel such as propane has been studied. In this research, characteristics of combustion and emission of propane-diesel dual fuel combustion were studied. First, effect of diesel injection timing, propane ratio, and EGR rate to MFB 50 on diesel-propane dual fuel combustion was systematically studied. Second, emissions characteristics with changing propane ratio in case having the almost same MFB 50 to conventional diesel combustion were studied. Effectiveness for reducing NOx and PM emissions are better when load is 6 bar BMEP than 4 bar BMEP. Hence, dual fuel combustion works better at high engine load. NOx and PM emissions reductions are about 66% and 91% respectively for the case of 1500 rpm 6 bar engine condition and 46% and 71% respectively for the case of 2000rpm 6 bar engine condition.
