타인의 의견과 믿음의 합리성

Abstract

본 논문은 논쟁의 당사자가 상대의 반대 의견을 접했을 때 합리 적으로 요구되는 믿음이 무엇인지에 대해 탐구한다. 특히 본고는 인식적으로 대등한 사람 간 의견 불일치 상황에 논의를 집중할 것인데, 왜냐하면 이것이 다른 상황에서는 볼 수 없는 난해한 인 식론적 문제들을 야기하기 때문이다.

본격적인 탐구에 앞서 1장에서는 논쟁의 당사자에게 요구되는 합리적 태도의 중요성에 대해 강조하고, 본 연구가 궁극적으로 대 답하고자 하는 질문을 던질 것이다. 또한 향후 논의에 대한 전반 적인 윤곽을 그리는 것과 함께 이 논문이 주장하고자 하는 바를 제시할 것이다.

2장에서는 인식적으로 대등한 사람이 무엇을 의미하는지 명료 히 하고, 이들 간 의견 불일치 상황이 낳는 문제들과 이를 해결하 기 위한 기존의 이론들을 설명할 것이다. 기존에 제시된 이론들은 크게 세 가지로 나뉠 수 있는데, 다른 사람의 반대 의견이 믿음의 정당성에 아무런 영향을 줄 수 없다는 견해와 최대한의 영향을 미 친다는 견해, 그리고 그 중간에 위치한 다양한 견해들이 그것이다. 본문에서는 양극단에 놓인 두 이론들(보수주의와 타협주의)과 그 중간쯤의 비교적 온건한 이론(약한 보수주의)에 대해 살펴보면서 각각의 문제점을 드러낼 것이다.

3장에서는 타협주의와 약한 보수주의를 비판하고 의견 불일치 상황에서 가장 올바른 판단을 제공하는 견해로서 새로운 보수주의 를 주장할 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 타협주의를 비판하는 단계 혼 동 논증을 제공하고, 약한 보수주의 역시 결과적으로 단계 혼동 논증으로부터의 비판을 피할 수 없다는 것을 보일 것이다. 다음으 로 주관적 합리성 논증을 통해 단계 간 규범성을 확립시키려는 어떠한 시도도 성공할 수 없다는 것을 논증하고자 한다. 3장의 마 지막 부분에서는 위의 두 논증에도 불구하고 여전히 상식적인 설 득력을 갖는 것처럼 보이는 타협주의의 직관을 해명한다. 그리고 이를 통해 이러한 직관이 결과적으로는 새로운 보수주의를 지지한 다는 것을 밝힐 것이다.

마지막 장에서는 새로운 보수주의에 대한 오해를 해명하고, 이 것이 타협주의 및 약한 보수주의의 장점을 어떻게 수용할 수 있는 지에 대해 설명할 것이다. 그리고 끝으로 새로운 보수주의가 실제 상황에서 구체적 고려에 따라 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 보이면 서 논의를 마무리할 것이다.

This study explores what belief is rationally required to a subject when he/she faces others contradicting opinions. In particular, I will focus on the disagreement of epistemic peers. This is because it causes some complicated epistemic problems, which do not arise in other disagreements.

In prior to the discussion, in Chapter 1, I will emphasize the importance of rational attitudes, which are required to debaters, and raise the question this study ultimately tries to answer. Also, I will not only provide an overall outline, but also present what this study attempts to argue.

In Chapter 2, there will be a clarification on what epistemic peer means, and an explanation about the existing theories, which try to solve the problems stemming from peer disagreement. These theories can be largely classified into three views: A view that others contradicting opinion should not affect ones belief, a view that others objection should have a maximized impact on ones belief, and diverse views that are in between the two. In the discussion, the two polarized views (the conservative and the conciliatory) and one of the relatively moderate views (the weak conservative) will be explained, along with the problems rising from these three respective views.

In Chapter 3, I will criticize each of the conciliatory and the weak conservative view and argue the new conservative view as the right direction to pursue. For this, Level-Confusion Argument, which criticizes the conciliatory view, will be introduced, and the fact that the weak conservative view is subject to the criticism from the level-confusion argument will be proved. Next, through Subjective Rationality Argument I will argue that any attempts to establish normativity between the two different levels cannot be successful. In the last section of Chapter 3, the intuition of the conciliatory view, which still seems to have a commonsensical persuasive power, will be elucidated. And I will argue through this that this intuition rather supports the new conservative view.

In the last Chapter, I will resolve some misunderstandings on the new conservative view and show how this view can embrace the strengths of the conciliatory and weak conservative views. Finally, I will close the discussion by presenting how the new conservative view will be applied to specific examples of disagreement.
