Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and structure of for sanjo gayageum composed by Donald Reid Womack.
Donald Reid Womack was a professor at the University of Hawaii and belonged to a cultural area where Eastern cultures actively interacted, working as a longtime composer in the region. Therefore, he developed a strong interest in East Asian culture and expanded his music world that fused East Asian music and Western music through direct interaction with Korean, Japanese, and Chinese traditional music players.
The music structure of is divided into 6 sections, and how the piece was studied based on the changes in the melody and rhythm of each section, the structure of the piece, and the playing method. Section A introduces the basic sound patterns and emerging intervals of the introductory part.
Section B is a slow section and uses various playing methods in the same pitch to reveal the diversity of the Gayageum's original tone and serves as a transitional phrase in the piece. Section C is a key part of the first half of the piece by suggesting, changing, and developing new sound patterns. The musical motivation is expanded by expanding, reducing, and varying the one presented first. This generates a feeling of unity while at the same time pursues the diversity of the piece. Section B′ serves as a transitional phrase that advances to the second half of the piece, similar to Section B. Section D is a section playing a bridge role for moving to next Section E. Section E is the key part of the second half of the piece, it reproduces and changes the sound pattern that occurs in the first half of the piece. In addition, the speed of the piece is expressed through the Horseshoe technique that appears in sanjo's jajinmori or hwimori rhythmic cycles, and the climax of the second half is expressed through the expansion of the note intervals. Furthermore, a coda function is provided at the end to organize the heightened mood of the piece and bring it to completion.
It can be seen that develops the dramatic narrative of the piece in a way that continuously changes and develops small-scale musical motives rather than presenting various melodies. Through this, it can be seen that the music retains a sense of unity, while the acoustic effect is fully utilized.
In this piece, Donald Womack uses the traditional gayageum technique that appears in sanjo, while approaching it from the perspective of modern music, making use of the unique characteristics of the gayageum and at the same time effectively revealing the composer's intentions. In addition, the modern interpretation of the melody using a scale using 12 notes maximizes the musical effect by overcoming the limitations of the Sanjo gayageum scale, ensuring diversity, and effectively using the unique playing method of the gayageum.
It is expected that this study will be of practical help to gayageum players in understanding the structure of the work of , as well as in the interpretation of the music. In addition, it is expected that this research on a piece of work composed by a Western composer who did not grow up in Korea will help expand the understanding of such pieces and reinterpret traditional musical elements in a modern way. Furthermore, it is hoped that it will be helpful in exploring new possibilities and directions for Sanjo gayageum in the creation of Korean traditional music.
