몸짓을 강조하는 그리기를 통한 불안의 재현과 해소

Abstract

이 논문은 2019년에서 2021년까지 불안에 대한 반응으로 제작된 나의 회화 작품 연구를 목적으로 한다. 이 시기에 제작된 작품들은 몸의 흔적이 화면에서 가장 중요한 것으로 나타나는 공통점을 지닌다. 이러한 화면의 특성은 특정 시기에 발생한 불안이라는 심리 상태의 특성에 그 시작점이 있다. 불안은 반복강박에서 출발하는 반응으로, 반복적인 이미지와 신체화 증상을 동반한다. 나는 2019년부터 불안의 이러한 특성에 주목하여 심리 상태를 반영하는, 왜곡된 몸 이미지를 재현하고자 했다. 또한 2020년 하반기 이후로는 몸짓을 드러내는 그리기 자체가 불안을 드러낼 뿐 아니라 불안을 해소할 수 있음에도 주목했다. 의식과 하나 된 몸으로서의 그리기는 몸의 흔적과 물질성이 두드러지는 화면을 특징으로 한다. 모든 회화는 몸의 움직임을 나타내는 흔적들로 이루어진다. 다만 2019년에서 2021년까지의 내 작업은 몸이 남긴 흔적의 축적이 화면에서 가장 두드러지는 특징으로 나타났다. 우선 나는 2019년부터 현재까지 심리 상태를 반영하는 이미지를 재현하기 위한 방법을 연구했다. 나는 반복적으로 떠오르는 이미지와 신체 증상을 관찰하고, 언제 이런 이미지가 떠오르는지, 신체의 증상을 반영하고 있는 이미지의 특징은 무엇인지, 이러한 왜곡된 신체 이미지를 어떻게 재현해야 하는지 등의 문제를 탐구했다. 이러한 과정은 나의 정신 상태와 이를 드러내는 몸을 거리를 두고 바라보는 것이었다. 한편 불안의 상황에서 떠올랐던 이미지를 그리는 과정은 역으로 내게 불안을 유발하기도 했다. 그래서 나는 몸과 정신을 이분법적으로 나누는 것에 의문을 품게 되었고, 2020년 하반기부터는 정신과 함께 주체가 된 몸에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 몸짓을 드러내는 회화적 흔적과, 이를 토대로 변화하는 화면에 대한 관심은 일련의 과정을 거치면서 확장되었다. 나는 회화의 제작과정이 어떤 식으로 주체성을 반영하는지, 몸짓을 강조하는 회화의 의미는 무엇인지, 물질적이고 촉각적인 흔적은 어떤 의미를 지니는지 등의 문제를 탐구하였다. 이러한 연구 과정은 물질성(materiality)과 촉각성(tactility)을 강조하는 회화적 회화(painterly painting)에 대한 의미를 고찰하는 과정이기도 했다. 나는 회화적 회화가 개인의 감정 차원에서 지니는 의미를 연구하고자 했으며, 나아가 감정 차원을 넘어서서는 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있는지 탐구하고자 했다.

The purpose of this paper is to study paintings produced in response to anxiety from 2019 to 2021. A series of works produced during this period have a common feature that the traces of the body appear to be the most important on the surface. This characteristic of the surface has a starting point in the characteristic of the psychological state of anxiety that occurred at a specific period. Anxiety is a reaction starting from repetitive compulsion, and accompanied by repetitive images and somatization symptoms. Since 2019, I have focused on these characteristics of anxiety and tried to reproduce the distorted body images that reflect the psychological state. Since the second half of 2020, I have noted that the painting itself showing gestures not only reveals anxiety but can also relieve anxiety. The Painting as the bodily expression united with consciousness is characterized by the surface with prominent bodily traces and materiality. All paintings consist of traces that reflect the body. However, the accumulation of traces reflecting the body was the most prominent feature of my work from 2019 to 2021. I have studied a method to reproduce images that reflect the psychological state since 2019. I observed repeatedly emerging images and physical symptoms and explored problems such as when these images come to mind, what characteristics of the images reflecting the symptoms of the body are, and how to reproduce these distorted body images. This process was to objectify the mental state and the body reflecting it. However, the process of painting an image that emerged in an anxious situation caused me anxiety ironically. Therefore, I came to question the dichotomous division of body and mind. Therefore, from the second half of 2020, I became interested in the body that became the subject along with the mind after carrying out the objectification process. My interest in painterly traces reflecting gestures and the changing surface based on them has expanded through this series of processes. I explored problems such as how the process of painting reflects subjectivity, what is the meaning of painting that emphasizes gestures, and what material and tactile traces in this painting mean. This study was a process of examining the meaning of painterly painting that emphasized materiality and tactility. I tried to study the meaning of painterly painting in terms of individual emotions. Furthermore, I tried to explore what meaning painterly painting could have beyond the level of emotion.
