생태문화축제로서 환경영화제의 환경교육적 의미

Abstract

환경위기에 적극적으로 대응하기 위해서는 시민들이 생태적 가치를 습득하고 이를 다른 구성원들과 공유하는 생활양식을 가지게 함으로써 생태문화를 구축할 필요가 있다. 이를 위한 효과적인 수단으로 환경영화제를 활용할 수 있다. 환경영화제는 생태적 가치를 지향하면서 영화의 힘을 이용하여 대중들에게 환경문제와 해결책에 대한 고민의 기회를 제공한다. 인류의 지속가능성을 추구하기 위해 개최되는 환경영화제는 그 중요성에 비해 환경영화제의 의미와 내용이 충분히 알려지지 않은 상태이기에 환경교육적 영향력이 충분히 발휘되지 못하는 실정이다. 축제의 유희 속에서, 시민들에게 환경영화를 매개로 소통을 경험하게 하고, 이를 통해 환경문제에 관심을 자연스럽게 환기한다면 환경영화제가 갖는 생태문화축제로서의 의미와 정체성, 효과가 확산될 수 있다. 현재까지 생태문화축제의 정의가 내려진 경우는 거의 없다. 또한, 환경교육의 관점에서 환경영화제의 의미를 찾고 있는 연구는 일부 있지만, 이에 참여한 시민들의 인식과 경험을 들여다보지 못한 한계가 있다. 따라서, 환경영화제를 생태문화축제의 한 갈래로 정립시키는 학술적인 과정과 환경영화제가 보여주는 환경교육적 의미를 확인하는 실증적인 과정이 함께 필요하다. 이 연구는 생태문화축제로서 환경영화제의 의미를 발견하려는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해, 환경영화제가 갖는 성격을 탐색적으로 알아보고, 생태문화축제로서 환경영화제는 어떤 의미를 지니는지 해석하고자 하였다. 질적 사례연구를 통해 서울환경영화제에 참여한 시민들의 참여 동기와 기대를 분석하였으며, 그들이 경험한 환경영화제는 교육적으로 어떤 시사점을 제공하는지를 살펴 다음과 같은 결론이 도출되었다. 첫째, 생태문화축제란, 즐겁고 특별한 시·공간에서 생태적 가치를 기반한 생활양식을 만들고 향유하는 집단적 활동으로, 환경교육적 성격을 지닌다. 이러한 생태문화축제의 성격에 비추어, 환경영화제를 포함한 사회의 다양한 축제를 환경교육적 자원으로 발굴하여 활용할 수 있다. 둘째, 환경영화제에서 나타나는 다양한 성격은 상호작용하며 환경교육적 의미를 담아낸다. 환경영화제에서 감상, 소통, 체험을 함께하는 시민의 경험에서 환경교육적 의미가 발견되었다. 생태문화축제로서 환경영화제는 시민이 생태적 문화를 학습하고 향유하는 교육적 가치를 제공한다. 즉, 환경영화제는 축제를 매개로 한 환경교육의 장(場)이 된다. 시민은 환경영화제를 새로운 경험적 환경교육, 사회 변화에 기여할 수 있는 생태문화축제로 수용하고 있다. 이것은 시민의 인식 속에 환경영화제의 환경교육적 가치와 가능성이 내재함을 시사한다. 이처럼 이 연구는 환경영화제의 환경교육적 가치를 실증적으로 조명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 환경영화제의 환경교육적 의미의 확산을 통해 생태문화 구축에도 선한 영향력을 미칠 수 있기를 기대한다.

Environmental film festivals can be used as an effective means for establishing ecological culture. The Environmental Film Festival aims at ecological values ​​and provides the public with an opportunity to think about environmental problems and solutions through the power of film. However, despite its importance, the environmental film festival is being slowly declining amongst famous film festivals, and as such its influence in environmental education is also declining. In order for citizens to have a variety of experience, including experiences environmental films that naturally arouse interest in environmental issues, the environmental film festival should be reborn as an ecological cultural festival. The purpose of this study is to discover the meaning of the environmental film festival as an ecological cultural festival. In order to achieve this, the nature of the environmental film festival was explored, and its meaning of the environmental film festival, interpreted. Through a qualitative case study, the motivations for attending and expectations of citizens who participated in the Seoul Environmental Film Festival were analyzed, and the following conclusions were drawn by examining the educational implications of what they experienced. First, an eco-cultural festival is a collective activity that creates and enjoys a lifestyle based on ecological values ​​in a fun and special time and space, and which also attributes of environmental education. Therefore, the environmental film festival, which is a branch of the ecological cultural festival, can be used as a resource for environmental education. Second, the various characteristics of the environmental film festival interact and bring new meaning to environmental education. These new meanings were found in participants' experience of appreciation, communication and experience at the Environmental Film Festival. As an eco-cultural festival, the environmental film festival becomes a venue for environmental education. Citizens accepted the environmental film festival as a new experiential environmental education and an ecological cultural festival that can contribute to social change. This suggests that the environmental educational value and potential of the environmental film festival are inherent in the perception of citizens. It is hoped that the environmental film festival will have a positive influence on the establishment of ecological culture through the spread of environmental educational meaning.
