이소크라테스의 정치적 부각연설 『헬레네 찬사』 분석

Abstract

본고의 목적은 이소크라테스의 부각 연설 『헬레네 찬사』를 분석하여 헬레네의 긍정적인 측면이 부각되는 방식을 살펴보고 연설의 정치적 함의를 밝히는 것이다. 일반적으로 헬레네는 긍정적으로 평가받지 못했던 인물이었다. 메넬라오스의 부인이었던 그녀는 트로이아의 왕자 파리스와 사랑에 빠져 트로이아로 도망갔고 결국 트로이아 전쟁이 발발했기에, 헬레네는 여러 작품에서 전쟁의 원흉이자 재앙으로 비난 받았다. 그러나 모든 작가가 헬레네를 비난한 것은 아니었다. 예컨대 고르기아스는 트로이아 전쟁의 원인을 말(logos)과 사랑의 힘, 신들에 돌리며 그녀를 변호했다. 하지만 이소크라테스는 더 나아가, 트로이아 전쟁은 그리스에 큰 이익을 가져온 전쟁이었고, 따라서 그 원인이 되었던 헬레네는 비난이 아니라 찬양의 대상이 되어야 한다고 주장했다. 이에 본고는 이소크라테스의 헬레네 찬양 방식, 논거들의 정당성, 효과를 설명한다. 이를 통해 『헬레네 찬사』가 헬레네 재해석의 한 획을 그은 찬사였음을 역설하고자 한다. 이와 더불어 본고는 이소크라테스의 『헬레네 찬사』가 기원전 370년대 그리스의 정치적 상황을 진단하며 그 해결책으로 아테네를 중심으로 페르시아를 겨냥한 범그리스주의 원정을 촉구하는 정치적 성격을 지닌 연설임을 밝힐 것이다. 이로써 이소크라테스의 『헬레네 찬사』가 정견(政見) 전달 방식의 장을 의회 연설뿐 아니라 부각 연설까지 넓혔음을 보여줄 것이다.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Isocrates' epideictic speech, Encomium of Helen in order to inspect how Helen's positive aspects has been highlighted and to reveal the political implications of this speech. In general, Helen was a figure who had not been positively evaluated. On the ground that Helen, as the wife of Spartan king Menelaus fell in love with Paris and fled away, She was castigated for being the main instigator of Trojan war and was described a disaster in several literatures. However, every author had not been criticizing Helen. For instance, Gorgias defended her by pointing a finger at logos, the power of love and the gods. On the other hand, Isocrates attempted to praise her, arguing that the Trojan War not only broke out from a reasonable motive but also was a blessed war for Greece. Therefore, this thesis explains Isocrates' method of praising Helen, logic and efficacy of his arguments. As a result, this thesis will show that Isocrates' Encomium of Helen was a distinguished epideictic speech that marked a milestone in the reinterpretation of Helen. In addition, This thesis assert that Isocrates' Encomium of Helen not only diagnosed the political situation in the 370s B.C of Greece but also impart the political message as a solution which is urging a Panhellenic expedition aimed at Persian. In conclusion, This thesis demonstrates that Isocrates' Encomium of Helen has expanded the horizon of impartation of political opinion to epideictic speeches.
