연주자의 악기 선택 기준에 관한 사례연구

Abstract

본 연구는 현대 튜바 연주자에게 필연적인 문제로 대두되고 있는 악기 선택에 관한 사례연구이다. 일반적으로 악보에 베이스 튜바 혹은 콘트라베이스 튜바로 반드시 연주해야 한다는 구체적인 명시가 없을 때, 연주자는 연주 형태와 악곡의 특성을 바탕으로 악기를 선택하게 된다. 또한 작곡가의 의도로 악기가 지정되어 있어도 다른 분류의 악기가 실제 연주에 있어서 더 적합한 경우를 종종 발견할 수 있다. 따라서 연주자가 악기 선택 기준에 대한 이해가 부족하거나 기존 악기 선택 기준만 따른다면 악기 선택에 있어 매우 제한된 시각을 가질 수 있는 위험성이 있다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 튜바에 대한 전반적 이해를 위해 튜바 악기의 역사에 대해 알아보며, Eb, F, Bb, C 튜바를 비슷한 음역과 음색을 기준으로 베이스 튜바와 콘트라베이스 튜바로 분류하여 자세히 살펴보았다. 그리고 관현악법 문헌과 악기론 문헌을 비롯한 선행연구를 바탕으로 음역, 아티큘레이션, 운지법, 음색 등의 악기 선택 기준을 제시하였다. 그리고 사례연구에서는 그 기준들을 바탕으로 일반적인 오케스트라에서 선택되어 사용되고 있는 튜바의 예시를 살펴보았고, 독주 형태에서의 악기 선택 기준을 연주자 관점에서 적용해보기 위해 힌데미트의 <베이스 튜바를 위한 소나타>를 예시로 두 분류의 악기를 구체적으로 비교하였다. 오케스트라 발췌곡에서 일반적으로 선택하고 있는 각 악기의 단독 사용과 교차 사용의 예시를 살펴보았을 때, 악기를 선택하는 기준 중 특히 작품의 음역과 다른 악기와의 음색의 조화를 중요하게 고려하여야 한다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 독주곡 예시인 힌데미트의 <베이스 튜바를 위한 소나타>는 작품 제목을 보면 베이스 튜바를 지정하여 작곡한 소나타로 볼 수 있다. 하지만 튜바 연주자들이 종종 콘트라베이스 튜바를 선택하여 연주하는 것을 볼 수 있었으며, 이번 사례연구를 통해 동일한 작품 안에서 다른 악기 선택으로 인해 각 악기의 효과적인 음역, 다양한 음색과 아티큘레이션 등의 영향으로 작품의 음악적 표현이 다르게 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This thesis is a case study on the selection of instruments, which is inevitable for modern tubists. In general, when the composer does not specifically state that a bass tuba or contra-bass tuba must be played, the performer selects an instrument based on the characteristics of performance and the piece. Also, even if the instrument is designated by the composer, it is often found that the other instrument might be more suitable depending on the situation. Therefore, it becomes risky when the instrument is selected by a performer who does not have a profound understanding in how to choose the right instrument, or blindly follows the traditional choice without any serious consideration. This study reviews the history of the tuba instrument for an overall understanding of the tuba, and classifies the Eb, F, Bb, and C tubas into the bass tuba and contra-bass tuba, based on ranges and tones. In addition, the thesis conducts literature reviews on orchestration and instrumentation, and discusses the criteria for instrument selection such as range, articulation, fingering, and timbre. The case study presents some examples of how tuba has been selected in orchestras based on those criteria, and compares bass tuba with contra-bass tuba with an example of Hindemiths sonata for bass tuba and piano, in order to apply performers perspective to solo pieces. From the examples of orchestral excerpts, I conclude that exclusive use of one type and alternative use of both types, should be determined by the range of the music and harmony with other instruments. For example, Hindemith specified the bass tuba in his sonata, however, it was often observed that tubists selected contra-bass tuba instead of bass tuba. This case study shows that the alternative use of tuba may have more effective expression of the range and more diverse tones and articulation.
